A family living near Kunming in Yunnan province, China, bought what they were told was a Tibetan mastiff puppy while traveling.
They raised the animal at home for more than two years. The animal grew far larger than expected, reportedly reaching about 200 kilograms (440 pounds); it stood and walked on its hind legs.
After learning that keeping protected wildlife without authorization was illegal, the family contacted local forest police for help. Authorities identified the animal as an Asiatic black bear, a nationally protected species in China that is classified as Vulnerable by the IUCN.
The family surrendered the bear, which was tranquilized and moved to the rescue center for observation and care.
