Yikes. Let’s talk about how to avoid this.

Start your kids YOUNG. Let them order food for themselves. Let them ask for help at the library. Give them opportunities to do things on their own with your supervision.

Success breeds success. Before long they will internalize the competence and confidence necessary to manage normal, daily life skills like communicating with service workers.

The danger of slow change is that we gradually adjust to each new normal without stopping to ask where it is leading. The unknown may feel frightening, but the greater concern may be the rising temperature of the place we have become accustomed to staying.
