Regenerative agriculture is so important.

RFK Jr. says 26,000 farmers have applied to transition to regenerative agriculture.

USDA has allocated $700 million to help conventional farmers make the switch.

The response is the largest the agency has ever seen.

Regenerative agriculture can rebuild depleted soil, improve water retention, and produce more nutrient-dense food.

It can also reduce farmersโ€™ dependence on costly chemical inputs and open access to foreign markets that restrict American produce over chemical use.

Farmers want healthier soil, stronger farms, and healthier families.

Volunteering at the (Home of the late artist, sculptor, and architectural designer James Hubbell and his wife, Anne). Helping at the Hubbell Home location was such a beautiful and grounding experienceโ€”spending the day working with my hands, tending the gardens, and being surrounded by the creativity and natural beauty of the land.

And what better reward after a day of meaningful work than six different kinds of from ! Totally felt like a fat kid in . This charming mountain town is famous for its apple pies and long-standing pie-making tradition, making a warm slice of Julian pie almost a rite of passage. We got to sample six varieties, but my favorite was the mixed berryโ€”sweet, juicy, and bursting with the taste of summer. A delicious ending to an already beautiful day!

RFK Jr. just announced the federal government is establishing its first-ever definition of ultra-processed foods.

RFK Jr. and Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins have submitted the definition for final review.

For too long, there has not even been a federal standard for identifying these foods.

You cannot fix Americaโ€™s food supply if you cannot clearly identify and label the foods harming Americans.

Have you ever noticed tiny black bees flying around your garden and mistaken them for pests? You might have unknowingly encountered one of the Philippinesโ€™ most valuable native pollinators.

Meet ๐Š๐ˆ๐˜๐Ž๐“ ๐Ÿ

Scientifically known as ๐‘ป๐’†๐’•๐’“๐’‚๐’ˆ๐’–๐’๐’๐’๐’‚ ๐’ƒ๐’Š๐’“๐’๐’Š, this tiny stingless bee is locally known by different names such as ๐Š๐ˆ๐˜๐Ž๐“, ๐Š๐ˆ๐–๐Ž๐“, ๐‹๐”๐Š๐Ž๐“, ๐Š๐ˆ๐Ž๐“, ๐Š๐˜๐Ž๐“ and other regional variations across the Philippines.

The name ๐Š๐ˆ๐˜๐Ž๐“ is believed to come from the English derivative of the word โ€œ๐‚๐”๐“๐„โ€, a fitting description for this tiny bee that is small, harmless, and often overlooked despite its important role in nature.

Known as ๐‹๐”๐Š๐Ž๐“ in some areas, this native stingless bee has become highly valued in local meliponiculture or stingless beekeeping because of its unique honey, rich propolis production, and ability to support agricultural productivity.

Despite their tiny size, these bees prove that some of natureโ€™s smallest creatures can have the biggest impact.

๐Š๐ˆ๐˜๐Ž๐“ may be much smaller than the familiar honeybee, but its ecological importance is enormous.

These bees actively collect:
๐ŸŒผ Nectar
๐ŸŒป Pollen
๐ŸŒฟ Plant resins used for nest building and colony protection

Because of their small size, they can access tiny flowers and plant resources that larger bees may not easily reach.

As pollinators, ๐Š๐ˆ๐˜๐Ž๐“ contributes to the reproduction of many plants and supports agricultural crops such as coconut and mango. Their presence can improve crop productivity by helping plants produce better yields.

A tiny bee doing a massive job.

Yes, ๐Š๐ˆ๐˜๐Ž๐“ produces honey.

But their honey is very different from the common honey we usually see.

Because stingless bee honey undergoes natural fermentation, it develops a unique flavor profile that is often described as:
๐Ÿฏ Sweet
๐Ÿฏ Slightly sour
๐Ÿฏ Tangy and refreshing

This distinct taste makes stingless bee honey a specialty product valued by beekeepers and honey enthusiasts. Small bee. Unique honey.

When most people imagine bees, they picture the familiar hexagonal honeycomb.

๐Š๐ˆ๐˜๐Ž๐“ creates something completely different.

Instead of traditional honeycombs, these bees build their nests using wax, plant resins, and other natural materials. Their colonies are made up of clusters of brood cells where young bees develop and separate storage pots where they keep honey and pollen.

Their nests are tiny architectural wonders created from materials collected directly from their environment.

One reason ๐Š๐ˆ๐˜๐Ž๐“ is becoming popular among beekeepers is because they are relatively easy to maintain.

They:
โœ… Require little space
โœ… Are gentle and easy to handle
โœ… Can thrive in gardens, farms, and urban areas
โœ… Provide natural pollination benefits

Unlike larger honeybees, stingless bees can be maintained even in smaller spaces, making them suitable for backyard meliponiculture.

A small bee colony can become a tiny ecosystem working every day.

Because of their appearance, KIYOT often goes unnoticed.

They are:
โšซ Very small
โšซ Dark-colored
โšซ Quiet flyers

Many people mistake them for pests, tiny flies, or unwanted insects.

But these tiny bees are actually hardworking pollinators helping maintain plant diversity and food production.

Sometimes, the insects we ignore are the ones quietly keeping ecosystems alive.

Despite being called stingless bees, ๐Š๐ˆ๐˜๐Ž๐“ does not have a functional stinger.

However, they are not completely defenseless.

When threatened, they can protect their colony by using their tiny jaws to bite or by attempting to entangle intruders.

They may not have a powerful sting, but they know how to defend their home.

๐Š๐ˆ๐˜๐Ž๐“ does not only produce honey.

They also create propolis, a resinous material collected from plants and used by the bees to protect and maintain their colonies.

Stingless bee propolis is valued because of its natural compounds and has been used in traditional practices and research.

Their value goes beyond the honey they produce.

๐‘ป๐’†๐’•๐’“๐’‚๐’ˆ๐’–๐’๐’๐’๐’‚ ๐’ƒ๐’Š๐’“๐’๐’Š is native to the Philippines and is also found in neighboring Southeast Asian countries.

Despite having unique native stingless bees, the Philippines still has much room to grow in promoting apiculture and meliponiculture.

Other countries have invested heavily in stingless bee conservation and farming because of their ecological and economic importance.

They recognize the value of these tiny pollinators.

Meanwhile, here in the Philippines, many of our own native bees remain unknown. Some are even removed because people mistake them for pests.

Sweet Grapes at Ilan-Lael, my last San Diego volunteer project with my Vista nourishing community!

There was something magical about tasting sweet, sun-warmed grapes straight from the garden at The Home and Studio, the compound nestled among ten acres of oak woodlands near . As a volunteer in the gardens, the simple act of picking and savoring the grapes felt deeply connected to the landโ€”a quiet reward for working with our hands, surrounded by beauty, art, and the generous spirit woven into this extraordinary place.

Between June 2024 and January 2025, a full 62% of commercial honey bee colonies in the United States died, according to an extensive survey.โ
โ
As soon as scientists at the USDA caught wind of the die-offs, they sprang into actionโ€”but their efforts were slowed by a series of federal funding cuts and layoffs. 6 months later, USDA scientists finally identified a culprit.โ
โ
According to a preprint posted last June, nearly all the dead colonies tested positive for bee viruses spread by parasitic mites. Alarmingly, every single one of the mites the researchers screened was resistant to amitraz, the only viable mite-specific pesticideโ€”or miticideโ€”of its kind left in humansโ€™ arsenal.โ
โ
Tracking the rise of miticide resistance is critical, experts say. Honey bees pollinate more than 90 commercial crops in the U.S., generate between $20 billion and $30 billion in agricultural revenue, and play a key role in keeping the U.S. food supply stable.โ
