Dry mouth is often a medication side effect, and it's more common than a lot of people realize. The clinical term for it is xerostomia, which just means your mouth isn't producing enough saliva to keep it properly moist. According to Cleveland Clinic, it affects roughly 1 in 5 people, most often as a side effect of antihistamines, decongestants, certain antidepressants, and several other common prescriptions.
It's more than an annoyance. Saliva plays a big protective role in your mouth, so when it drops off, cavity risk and gum problems tend to go up along with it.

If dry mouth has become a regular thing for you, it's worth mentioning at your next visit. There are simple ways to manage it once we know what's behind it.

Dental meridians are energetic pathways running through the body, connecting organs, glands, muscles, and even points along the spine. The concept comes from Traditional Chinese Medicine, and it also includes the teeth.

Take the upper wisdom tooth, for example. It connects with structures such as the right inner ear, right shoulder, heart, and several points along the spine. It's not a diagnosis, more a way of thinking about the energetic connections between mouth and body alongside the physical ones, and how they may influence organs all along that pathway.

Turns out how many hours you sleep might not be the whole story. A 2026 study tracked sleep patterns in middle-aged and older adults and found that people who went to bed and woke up at roughly the same time every day felt noticeably better, physically and mentally, than those with an inconsistent schedule, even when they were sleeping the same total number of hours.
So if you've been chasing eight hours but still feel off, it might be worth looking at your schedule itself, not just the number. A little more consistency could be doing more for you than you'd think.

Before CPAP machines, severe sleep apnea usually meant surgery, sometimes even a permanent tracheostomy. The idea for something better actually started with dogs. In the 1970s, researchers tested positive airway pressure on breeds known for breathing trouble, like bulldogs and pugs, using a reversed vacuum cleaner to blow air.

When a human patient wanted an alternative to a tracheotomy, the first version built for a person used a paint compressor with its airflow reversed, hooked up to tubing and a mask. Loud, unsteady pressure, nothing like a modern CPAP. But after one night, the patient reported feeling alert for the first time in years.
CPAP has genuinely been a life-saving innovation. But we're fortunate that today there are even more comfortable and versatile options, like oral appliance therapy, for people who never got along with a mask.
