She smiles in the photo. She leads the meeting. She checks on everyone else. 💜

And she may be living with ABUSE in Silence. Domestic violence does not have a type. It can affect women in every community, profession, income level, and educational background. A woman's confidence or accomplishments do not tell us what she is facing behind closed doors.

For Domestic Violence Awareness Month, join Coach Kimberly and Dr. Kara for Unleashed Podcast Episode 42: The Woman Behind the Smile: Domestic Violence Does Not Have a Type.

We're talking about why assumptions can keep women from being seen, how to respond when someone trusts you with her story, and why compassion matters more than judgment.

🪶 OCTOBER 12: INDIGENOUS PEOPLES’ DAY — HONOR THE TRUTH, HONOR THE PEOPLE. ❤️🤎💛

Today, we recognize and honor Indigenous Peoples, their history, culture, resilience, contributions, and the generations who have cared for this land long before European colonization.

Let’s talk about WHY many Indigenous people and their allies do not celebrate Columbus Day. ✊🏽

🌎 First, Christopher Columbus did NOT discover America. Indigenous nations were already living throughout the Americas for thousands of years, with established communities, cultures, governments, traditions, and thriving civilizations. You cannot discover a place where people already live.

💔 Second, we must acknowledge the devastating history of colonization. Columbus’s arrival in the Caribbean ushered in an era of European conquest, forced labor, enslavement, violence, and catastrophic population loss among Indigenous peoples. Columbus and the colonial system associated with his voyages contributed to profound atrocities against Native communities.

🪶 Third, history matters. Celebrating Columbus without acknowledging this suffering erases the experiences of the people who were here first. Indigenous Peoples’ Day offers an opportunity to recognize their humanity, honor their sovereignty, celebrate their cultures, and confront historical injustices honestly.

This is not about erasing history. It is about telling the FULL story — including the voices that were too often silenced.

✨ Today, let’s choose truth over mythology, education over erasure, and respect over glorification.

Honor Indigenous voices. Support Native-owned businesses. Learn the history of the Indigenous nations whose ancestral lands you live on. Teach future generations the truth.

Because recognition, respect, and justice matter. ❤️

🪶 Whose history are we celebrating — and whose history have we forgotten?

Her résumé says accomplished. Her smile says “I’m fine.” Neither tells you what happens behind closed doors. 💜

Domestic violence does not have a “type.” A woman’s education, career, income or public image cannot tell us whether she feels safe at home.

During Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Coach Kimberly and I are making space for an honest conversation about **The Woman Behind the Smile**—and the emotional abuse, control and fear that can go unseen.

As an HR executive and advocate for women, I believe we must look beyond titles and appearances. The woman who leads the meeting, supports everyone else and keeps showing up may also need someone to ask, “How are you, really?”—and listen without judgment.

This is about making women’s health a priority: listening to our bodies, seeking early medical attention, scheduling recommended screenings, protecting our emotional well-being and rebuilding body confidence through every season of life.

Today, we honor the courage of survivors, those currently receiving treatment, the families and caregivers walking beside them—and the beautiful lives of those we have lost. 💗
