🚨 Pregnancy Alert: What You Need to Know About the Cyclospora Outbreak 🤰🏽🥗

If you’re pregnant, you’ve probably seen the headlines about the Cyclospora parasite linked to fresh produce. Don’t panic. You do not need to stop eating fruits and vegetables, but now is the time to be extra cautious. 💚

Here’s how to protect yourself and your baby:

✅ Choose these (with proper preparation):
🍌 Bananas
🍊 Oranges
🥑 Avocados
🥭 Mangoes
🍎 Apples (wash before peeling)
🍐 Pears
🍠 Sweet potatoes (cook)
🥕 Carrots (cook or scrub well)
🥦 Broccoli (cook)
🫑 Bell peppers (wash well or cook)
🫘 Green beans (cook)

⚠️ Limit or avoid eating raw during the outbreak:
🥬 Lettuce and leafy greens
🌿 Fresh cilantro
🌱 Fresh basil
🍓 Berries
🥗 Bagged salad mixes

If you eat these foods, wash them thoroughly and cook them whenever possible.

🚫 Avoid 100% during pregnancy:
• Raw sprouts (alfalfa, clover, mung bean, radish)
• Any fruits or vegetables included in an FDA or CDC recall
• Produce that is moldy, bruised, or spoiled

🧼 Protect yourself:
✔️ Wash produce under cool running water.
✔️ Scrub firm fruits and vegetables with a clean produce brush.
✔️ Wash produce even if you’re going to peel it.
✔️ Soaking produce briefly (about 30 seconds to 2 minutes) in a solution of 1 tsp baking soda to 2 cups of water has been proven to be an effective method.
✔️ Cook vegetables to at least 158°F (70°C) when possible.
✔️ Wash your hands before preparing food.
✔️ Use separate cutting boards for produce and raw meat.

Call your healthcare provider right away if you develop:
• Watery diarrhea lasting more than a couple of days
• Severe stomach cramps
• Fever
• Signs of dehydration

Healthy eating is still one of the best things you can do during pregnancy. Stay informed, practice good food safety, and don’t let fear keep you from getting the nutrients you and your baby need. 💜

Juneteenth: Honoring Freedom, Celebrating Legacy

Today, we celebrate Juneteenth, a day that marks the emancipation of enslaved African Americans and honors the resilience, strength, and contributions of Black communities throughout history.

At Aya Birth Collective, we recognize that birth work is deeply connected to justice, advocacy, healing, and the right of every family to be treated with dignity and respect.

We honor the Black mothers, grandmothers, midwives, healers, and birth workers who have carried generations forward through wisdom, love, and perseverance.

As we celebrate freedom, we also remain committed to supporting equitable maternal care and creating spaces where Black families feel seen, heard, and empowered throughout pregnancy, birth, postpartum, and beyond.

❤️ Freedom.
🖤 Legacy.
💚 Community.

Happy Juneteenth from Aya Birth Collective.

Pregnancy Myth: “You can’t exercise while pregnant.”

Truth: For many healthy pregnancies, movement isn’t just safe, it’s beneficial!
Staying active during pregnancy can help:
✅ Improve circulation
✅ Boost energy levels
✅ Reduce aches and pains
✅ Support better sleep
✅ Prepare your body for labor and birth
✅ Promote overall physical and emotional well-being

The key is finding activities that feel good for your body and are approved by your healthcare provider.
Some pregnancy-friendly options include:
🚶 Walking
🧘 Prenatal yoga
🏊 Swimming
💪 Strength training with appropriate modifications
🤸 Stretching and mobility exercises

Remember: Pregnancy isn’t usually a time to stop moving, it’s a time to move intentionally and listen to your body’s changing needs.
Always talk with your provider about what types of exercise are appropriate for your individual pregnancy.

Pregnancy Myth: “If you have heartburn, your baby will have a lot of hair.” 🔥👶

You’ve probably heard this one from a friend, aunt, or even your grandmother!
So... is it true?

Surprisingly, there may be a small connection between pregnancy heartburn and babies being born with more hair. Some studies have found a correlation, but heartburn isn’t caused by your baby’s hair tickling your stomach.

The real culprit is pregnancy hormones. Hormones like progesterone relax the muscles that normally keep stomach acid where it belongs, making heartburn more common as pregnancy progresses.

And while some parents with severe heartburn give birth to babies with full heads of hair, others don’t and plenty of parents with little to no heartburn have hairy babies, too!

The takeaway? Heartburn isn’t a reliable predictor of your baby’s hairstyle.

Pregnancy Myth: “Labor always starts with your water breaking.” 💦
Thanks to movies and TV, a lot of people think labor begins with a dramatic gush of water in the middle of a grocery store aisle 😅

But in reality?
For many births, labor starts with contractions first, and water breaking may happen much later or sometimes not until you’re already at the hospital.
Every labor experience is different.

Signs labor may be starting can include:
- Regular contractions
- Lower back pain or cramping
- Loss of mucus plug
- Increased pelvic pressure
- Water breaking (sometimes!)

One of the best things you can do before birth is learn the many ways labor can begin so you feel informed, prepared, and less anxious when the time comes.

Pregnancy Myth: “You’re eating for two.”

Truth?

Your body needs more nutrients during pregnancy, not necessarily double the food.

Instead of simply eating larger portions, focus on making your meals more nutrient-dense:

🥑 Add avocado, nuts, seeds, or olive oil for healthy fats
🥚Choose protein-rich snacks like Greek yogurt, eggs, or nut butter
🥬 Add leafy greens to smoothies, sandwiches, or pasta
🌾Swap white carbs for whole grains when possible
🫘 Include iron-rich foods like beans, lentils, lean meats, and spinach
🍓Add fruits and veggies with every meal for fiber + vitamins
💦Stay hydrated throughout the day

Pregnancy nutrition is about supporting YOU and baby with nourishment not pressure, guilt, or “eating twice as much.”

🥑 Avocado during pregnancy = nature’s prenatal snack.

Here’s why moms-to-be should keep it on the menu:

• Folate supports baby’s brain and spinal development
• Healthy fats help with baby’s brain growth
• Potassium may help reduce leg cramps and swelling
• Fiber supports digestion and can help with pregnancy constipation
• Magnesium helps support muscles, sleep, and stress levels
• Vitamin C + E support immune health and glowing skin

Bonus: avocado is easy on the stomach during nausea days and actually keeps you full longer.

Quick ideas:
Avocado toast, smoothies, tacos, salads, eggs, or straight from the spoon standing in the kitchen at 9pm. No judgment.

Pregnancy nutrition doesn’t have to be complicated. Small nourishing choices add up. 💜
