Our Irvine office is taking appointments for January 2023. We do our best to accommodate on-site ultrasound and your consult visit on the same day. Varicose veins treatment has come a long way from the traditional vein stripping and surgical removal. All procedures are done in office with immediate return to normal activities.

What have we here? Whoooosh sound is most likely what you’ll hear during an ultrasound if you have a vein leak. An ultrasound is usually performed if your doctor suspects a vein leak. The condition is known as chronic venous insufficiency. It can cause symptoms experienced by millions such as leg fatigue and tiredness, throbbing, swollen ankles, leg skin discoloration, varicose and spider veins, ulcers or skin wounds.

The ultrasound study must be performed in the standing position to most accurately detect a vein valve leak. Modified positions are acceptable depending on the cause.

Ah, compression stockings…Many are familiar with compression stockings; whether they’ve been recommended to you by your doctor, a friend or online advice, or perhaps trying to decrease the swelling of legs and ankles. Compression stockings are a great option for decreasing symptoms caused by vein disease but they’re not always practical to be worn daily especially with the hot summer coming up.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful to get rid of stockings, identify the main issue behind vein disease, and treat with minimal downtime?

Three steps:
1. Call and book a visit/ultrasound
2. Treatment plan and insurance pre-authorization (if applicable)
3. Treat and resume normal activities.

You may be wondering why you’re looking at pipes and valves.

Our leg veins are responsible for returning used blood in our legs
back for re-oxygenation. A series of valves in our veins ensure this happens in one direction.

In venous disease, these valves are most commonly dysfunctional, leading to backwards flow (insufficiency/reflux) and higher venous pressures. High pressures may then lead to symptoms such as heavy legs, throbbing, leg swelling and varicose veins.

I often use this visual analogy to help explain why vein disease.
