Our August Book Club selection comes from Dr. DeGeus: 101 Lessons from the Dugout by MLB sportswriter Ken Davidoff and pediatrician Dr. Harley Rotbart.
The book argues that the principles that make someone a better player-discipline, preparation, teamwork, and perseverance-also help people succeed in school, relationships, work, and life.
Each lesson begins with a baseball or softball situation (such as a batting order, strikeout, double play, or home-field advantage) and draws a practical life lesson from it. The central message is that baseball and softball are more than games-they provide practical lessons for becoming a responsible, resilient, and compassionate person. By applying the values learned on the field, readers can better handle challenges in school, friendships, family life, and future careers.

Today is an extra special day as we celebrate 27 years of exceptional care, compassion, and dedication from Dr. Jennifer Bevan! 🎉

Since joining Lake Forest Pediatrics on August 2, 1999, Dr. Bevan has cared for generations of children while building lasting relationships with families throughout our communities. Her passion for pediatrics began with two simple loves—science and children—and for the past 27 years she has combined both to make a meaningful difference in countless lives.

Ask anyone who knows Dr. Bevan and they'll tell you her greatest gift is her ability to connect with children. Whether she's helping calm an anxious child, celebrating milestones, or simply finding a way to make a visit a little more fun, her warmth and compassion shine through in every interaction. As she says, "Make it fun." It's a philosophy that has comforted thousands of children over the years.

While Dr. Bevan has achieved so much throughout her career—including serving as Vice President of the Children's Community Physicians Association (CCPA)—what she treasures most is something much simpler: the privilege of caring for children alongside what she lovingly calls her "forever work family." She often says the best part of her job is the daily interactions with the kids, and anyone who has met her knows exactly why.
