Yes. Perfectly said.
Honestly, I was not going to make this post, but I have to be honest with my following what I truly believe in my heart is right. I know we have different things to let other adults know a child is nonspeaking, if that’s either by a card they hold up, a blue bucket, or other things that have been made. While I respect everybody’s decision because each adult in a child’s life will have the ultimate best intentions, a child should not have to announce their disability in order to get treated equally as their peers nor get candy. I feel like we aren’t going to progress as a society if people have to see things like this to be kind to a child and not say rude things. I really hoped this would have changed from when I was a child, from adults making rude remarks and holding candy over my head until I said trick or treat. But sadly, it is not. Kindness is free and should be the default. If you see a kid who can’t speak, please give them the candy. We communicate in all sorts of different ways and even through a simple smile or wave. Be inclusive this Halloween. And as always, don’t be afraid to stand up for your child if an adult is treating them differently unfairly.
Love as always,
Jordan Christian 💙
