Just another day in the life of a bladder cancer and obesity survivor…….. But hey, I’m alive, cancer free and maintaining today a 60lb 34% weight loss, so I’m still smiling!

As retired professionals we have so much to give. While I love the fun parts of retirement, I also love the fulfilling, purpose driven parts of retirement. Think Patient Advocacy is something you’d like to learn more about? DM me.

I’m sorry but this is the dumbest most infuriating card I’ve ever seen. We don’t ā€œwin our battleā€, Cancer hasn’t ā€œmet its matchā€. It’s a damn disease. And we do the best we can, day in and day out. I am beyond grateful and am No Evidence of Disease and in recovery . But this card really ticked me off when I saw it. When you’re suffering are you not a good match. FFS!!!

Strength training with a stoma is where my bladder cancer, radical cystectomy and obesity recovery intersect. I won’t keep the weight off without strength training. Even with a GLP-1, healthy eating, seeing a Registered Dietician, and s specialized Therapist, those last 15 pounds would not stay off until I found a way to consistently and safely strength train. I learned that there are plenty of core exercises that don’t create flexion at the stoma and that do not require heavy weights.

Knowing that everyone who has a radical cystectomy has a hernia risk it’s important. Those of us with a stoma are at higher risk. Ask your doctor if you have any of the risk factors I had, or any others. And know that flexion at the stoma site should always be avoided and there are LOTS of core exercise that aren’t a crunch!
