In honor of Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we are celebrating saints like Saint Paul Miki, the Patron Saint of Japan and one of the first native Japanese Christians whose faith endured even in the face of persecution.

As a Jesuit seminarian and gifted preacher, Paul Miki boldly shared the Gospel at a time when Christianity was outlawed in Japan. In 1597, he and 25 companions were arrested and crucified for their faith. From the cross, Paul continued to preach, stating just before his death “After Christ’s example, I forgive my persecutors. I do not hate them. I ask God to have pity on all, and I hope my blood will fall on my fellow men as a fruitful rain.” His courage and unwavering trust in God helped sustain the Catholic faith in Japan for generations. St. Paul Miki reminds us that even in the most difficult moments, faith, mercy and hope can leave a lasting impact.

Stroke symptoms can happen suddenly, and knowing what to look for can make all the difference.

Our Stroke Coordinator Karen Emmons reminds us to remember B.E.F.A.S.T. when identifying possible stroke symptoms with Balance, Eyes, Face, Arms, Speech and Time.

Time is critical when it comes to stroke care. Receiving medicine within three and a half hours from when symptoms begin can help restore your faculties and preserve brain function.

As National Stroke Month is coming to an end, we encourage everyone to learn more about the disease so you can be prepared and B.E.F.A.S.T. throughout the year by visiting https://christus.io/stroke

When treating new patients, Family Medicine Specialist Dr. Clint Lincoln prefers to begin by learning about their current medical problems, past medical history, and cancer screening. He believes that understanding these details helps set the foundation for effective care. One thing he wished Dr. Lincoln every patient knew and practiced regularly was healthy eating habits, which he says improve overall health and well-being.

After suffering a stroke in 2025, retired businessman James Gueringer faced a long road to recovery. The stroke left him unable to speak, even to say his own name, and the future felt uncertain. But through the specialized care and support of our outpatient rehabilitation team, James began regaining not only his speech, but also his confidence and independence.
With the help of speech therapy, James worked step by step toward rebuilding his life after a stroke. His rehabilitation journey gave him confidence, changed his and his family's lives, and is a powerful reminder of the impact compassionate, personalized therapy can have on recovery.

This Memorial Day, we pay tribute to the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. As we gather with friends and family, we also take a moment to acknowledge those who never made it home with a prayer service and a Missing Man Table—an enduring symbol of remembrance.

In honor of Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we are celebrating saints like Saint Magdalene of Nagasaki. Born near Nagasaki, Japan, Magdalene endured the loss of her family to martyrdom, yet her faith only deepened. Magdalene taught catechism, sought alms for the poor, visited the sick and encouraged fellow Christians during intense persecution. After several spiritual leaders were martyred, she continued their mission and eventually surrendered herself to authorities in 1634 to strengthen the courage of others. She endured torture for 13 days before her martyrdom. Canonized in 1987, Saint Magdalene remains a powerful witness of courage, solidarity and unwavering love for Christ.

When Carol first noticed a persistent cough, she knew something was wrong. She later learned she had suffered a stroke that affected her ability to swallow, leaving her unable to eat or drink on her own. The stroke also impacted her walking, fine motor skills, memory and thinking, requiring intensive rehabilitation and the use of a feeding tube.
Determined to get back to the life she loved, especially spending time with her 2-year-old great-grandson, Carol began outpatient rehabilitation with our team. Through speech and swallowing therapy, she worked to relearn everyday functions, regain strength and independence, and ultimately have her feeding tube removed.
Today, Carol is back to being active at home and in her community, and she credits her recovery to the compassionate support she received throughout her rehab journey.

Nichole Guidry's world turned upside down when she suffered two strokes within 18 months, taking away her words. Fortunately, she had access to speech therapy while hospitalized, which she continues at our outpatient rehab. At first, Nichole had difficulty speaking, reading, writing, and understanding words. Today, her speech has gradually improved, and she says speech therapy has been beneficial to her recovery. She's grateful to our team, who she said helps her do more each time she sees them. Recently, she achieved a major milestone when she ordered for herself at Waffle House.
