At 50, Tamika Carter and her husband, David, always knew they would be older parents. After 27 years of marriage, they never gave up on their dream of expanding their family, despite a few setbacks along the way. Bolstered by a strong support system and their faith in God, their dream became a reality at our Lake Area Hospital when she welcomed her daughter, Denim.
Born at 35 weeks, Baby Denim received care at our NICU to support her feeding. Today, she continues to thrive at home with Tamika, who is successfully pumping. For Tamika and David, whose family has deep CHRISTUS roots through David's more than 30 years of service, it's a journey that was always meant to be and has brought a new sense of peace and joy to their lives.
She's grateful to our entire care team, who went above and beyond in her care, even surprising her with a baby shower, and to her physician, Obstetrics and Gynecology Specialist Dr. James Barrow, whom she calls "the best." Her advice to other expectant mothers, or those hoping to become mothers, is simple: trust in God's timing. As long as He doesn't say no, it's always possible.

AHEC of a summer was a huge success!

We were proud to welcome high school students from Calcasieu Parish schools as they explored health care career pathways through hands-on learning, shadowing and volunteer opportunities.
Throughout the program, students had the chance to experience several areas of health care, including surgery robot day, a tour of the coroner’s office, CPR certification, trauma care education and Stop the Bleed training.

Through our partnership with the Southwest Louisiana Area Health Education Center, we are helping students connect classroom learning with real-world health care experiences. Opportunities like this strengthen career readiness, inspire future health care professionals and support the next generation of those called to serve.

Calcium scoring results indicate the amount of plaque present in the coronary arteries. A score of zero means no disease, no identifiable plaque, and a very low risk of a coronary event, with a retest recommended in five years. The range of 1 to 99 reflects early-stage disease with minimal plaque, and patients in this category should follow up with their primary care physician. Results between 100 and 399 indicate early-stage disease with moderate plaque, and mild coronary artery disease is highly likely, while readings of 400 or higher signal advanced disease and may require a same-day visit if the score reaches 1000. These categories help patients understand their results so they can discuss next steps with their doctor.

According to Gastroenterology Specialist Dr. Grant Patton, one of the most important signs to see a gastroenterologist is blood in the stool. While some patients assume it is due to hemorrhoids or straining, more younger patients are being diagnosed with colon cancer, making early evaluation critical. Another red flag is unexplained weight loss combined with gastrointestinal symptoms. Dr. Patton urges patients not to ignore these signs and to seek care promptly. Early detection and intervention can prevent serious complications and improve outcomes.

Specializing in minimally invasive and robot-assisted care, Dr. Olamide Omidele brings a high level of training to his role as a urologist and urologic oncologist, treating patients in need of minimally invasive options for complex urologic cancers. From prostate cancer to kidney tumors, bladder disorders and urologic conditions, Dr. Omidele is expanding access to advanced urologic cancer care closer to home.

We recently welcomed community members and partners to CHRISTUS Ochsner Lake Area Hospital for a preview of a new model maternal health room designed to improve care for mothers and babies across Southwest Louisiana.

Guests explored the innovative space, shared feedback and learned how community partnerships can help expand access to high-quality maternal care. As a prototype for future expansion, this initiative supports our commitment to ensuring more families have access to compassionate prenatal, delivery and postpartum care close to home.

What an unforgettable evening to Strike Out Cancer with the Lake Charles Gumbeaux Gators!
We were honored to provide free admission for our community as we celebrated the incredible strength of local cancer fighters and survivors. Survivors like Chanell LeDay, who threw out the ceremonial first pitch and later joined fellow survivors and fighters as they walked the bases in a powerful show of hope and resilience. Chanell received her care at our cancer center, where our care teams were privileged to walk alongside her throughout her cancer journey.
