This is the event that keeps our doors open for another year serving pregnant women and families in SWLA. For many years, we have seen young mothers facing homelessness with their babies. It has been brought to our attention that there are several people in our area who have a desire to bring a solution to this problem. If this is something you or someone you know has considered, we would like you to invite join the conversation and learn more about what it would actually take to start a maternal housing program.

ABC will be having an informal meeting at the Pregnancy Center on Thursday night September 10th at 5:30pm. The goal of this meeting is to determine if there are enough people interested to start the process of bringing a Maternity Home to Southwest Louisiana. If this is you, please join us Thursday evening. 🙏

Rising to the challenge...

For the past 3 months, these men have been answering the call to serve fathers. We've met one on one with 80 new dads in our community since June 1st. Starting on September 14th, we will begin a 12-week course with some of these dads to teach them how to lead in GREATNESS, HONOR & TRUTH.

Here's a sneak peek taken from the Men for Life curriculum that we will be guiding them through:
"Somebody in your life is about to depend on you completely.
That is either the most terrifying sentence you have ever read, or the most exciting one. For most men, honestly, it is both at the same time. If you feel unprepared, you are in good company — every man who ever became a father felt exactly that, including the ones who turned out great at it.
Here is what we believe about you, before we know anything about your past: you have something in you that the world has never bothered to call out. You have wondered whether there is more to being a man than what you have been shown. There is. The next twelve weeks are about finding it.

WHAT WE ARE HERE TO DO
We are not here to teach you how to change a diaper. We are here to build the man who changes it without fear — because he knows exactly who he is and what he is for.

WHAT YOU GET OUT OF IT:
--A man in your corner who has been where you are and will tell you the truth.
--A room full of other men going through the same thing at the same time.
--Straight answers about pregnancy, birth, and what a newborn actually needs.
--A clear picture of the father you want to be — in your own words, on paper.
--A certificate when you finish, and an invitation into a brotherhood that does not end at Week 12."

We are so thankful for CHRISTUS Ochsner Health SWLA and Lactation Consultant, Leslie Bradley! She has been a wonderful teacher at several of our Bump 2 Baby sessions helping our moms get the education and confidence they need. A new session of Bump 2 Baby starts here at ABC today and we are so excited to help empower young families as they get ready to welcome their little ones. SWLA is an incredible community with great resources!

During National Breastfeeding Month, Registered Nurse Lactation Consultant Leslie Bradley reminds families that breastfeeding offers benefits for both babies and mothers. According to Leslie, a mother's body produces colostrum, a protein milkshake filled with antibodies that help fight infection and coat a baby's new GI system with healthy bacteria. Breastfeeding is also associated with lower rates of ear infections, SIDS, childhood obesity, and childhood cancer.
As for the mother, or mothers, breastfeeding can help with weight loss, help the uterus shrink back down, and is linked to lower rates of breast cancer and heart issues, while also supporting glucose control. She encourages mothers to take advantage of our free Mother Baby Clinic, where they can receive support, advice, and encouragement throughout their breastfeeding journey.
