The history of eyeglasses includes many key moments, from the invention of the first lenses to the introduction of plastic lenses in the 1980s:
13th century
Italian monks created the first shaped lenses from beryl quartz, which were used for reading. The first eyeglasses were invented in Northern Italy, and were made of two lenses riveted together at the ends. They were placed on the nose and held in place by clamping the nose between the rims.
15th century
Eyeglasses became more popular, especially after the publication of the first newspaper, The London Press. They became a status symbol of wealth and intelligence.
1600s
Spanish craftsmen invented the first frame temples, which were attached to the frame with silk ribbons or strings that looped over the ears.
1727
British optician Edward Scarlett invented the modern style of eyeglasses frame, which could be placed over the ears and nose.
1827
English astronomer and mathematician Sir George Biddle Airy invented glasses to correct astigmatism.
1980s
Plastic lenses were introduced as a more durable alternative to glass lenses.
20th century
Eyeglasses became a fashion accessory, and various styles have come in and out of popularity.
