A new study found that a gut-derived byproduct from the bacterial metabolism of the artificial sweetener sucralose can damage DNA and change the expression of genes associated with inflammation, oxidative stress and cancer [PMID: 37246822].

When scientists exposed human blood cells to sucralose-6-acetate, a compound produced by bacterial action on sucralose in the gut, they saw DNA strand breaks which could potentially increase the risk of cancer.

Sucralose-6-acetate can also be produced during the manufacturing process of sucralose, with recent commercial samples containing levels up to 0.67%.

This byproduct has also been shown to affect the expression of over 30 genes, such as Metallothionein 1 G (a cancer-related gene) and others associated with inflammation, oxidative stress and immune function.

Direct exposure to sucralose also impacted gene expression, including those involved in energy production.

The researchers concluded that sucralose-6-acetate is genotoxic - eek!

In general, artificial sweeteners of any kind aren’t great for health because they cue insulin (even though they don’t contain glucose, which is the typical trigger for the release of insulin) and light up pathways in the brain that seek reward (in addition to driving inflammation & oxidative stress).

That’s why there are no artificial sweeteners included in the Younger You longevity program - we opt for small amounts of natural sweeteners, such as honey and monk fruit instead.
