📖 from the Autobiography of A.T. Still — the founder of Osteopathy, in his own words.
Here’s what most people don’t know: Still was a trained MD first. He watched conventional medicine fail the people he loved — and instead of doubling down on drugs, he turned to nature to learn the body’s secrets.
What he found became Osteopathy.
He described the human being as a “grand being containing Mind, Matter, and Motion” — not just a body to be dosed, but a whole, intelligent system built to heal itself. That idea was radical in his day. It’s still the heart of osteopathic medicine in ours.
“To know all of a bone in its entirety would close both ends of an eternity.” — A.T. Still
He wasn’t being poetic. The body isn’t a quick study. You don’t master it by memorizing a few bones, muscles, and nerves — you spend a lifetime learning it, because that’s what it takes to actually help someone heal.
And he knew exactly who he was writing for: “This is written for future generations, not merely the present. The men and women unborn will be the jurors.”
That’s us now. 🤲
