Are you pregnant and wanting to maintain healthy, safe work outs without pain?

Proper body mechanics and modifications are crucial for avoiding injury and pain while working out. During pregnancy, our bodies go through a lot of changes, making modifications necessary.

Here are some tips for safe weightlifting during pregnancy:
🤰Keep your weight close to your body in order to decrease the lever arm. This can decrease back pain and avoid extra strain.
🤰Widen your stance for improved balance. This could mean spreading your feet slightly wider side to side or stepping one foot forward.
🤰Breathe. Breathe out during the "hard" part or the lift of the exercise, breathe in while lowering the weight. Holding your breath increases your blood pressure and can limit blood flow to your baby.
🤰Be aware of possible abdominal coning. If you notice this, stop the exercise, re-engage your core muscles. If the coning continues, you need modification of the exercise.
🤰Decrease your resistance and increase your repetitions. This helps to decrease the strain and stress on your joints, muscles, and ligaments/tendons.
🤰Avoid lying flat. After the first trimester, it is best to avoid exercises that require you to lay flat on your back because of restricted blood flow to your heart in this position.

For personalized modifications and assessment, contact Flourish Pelvic Physical Therapy and Wellness.

As you start your weekend, here is your reminder to take a few minutes to release the tension accumulated in your body from the week.

🍃Take a deep breath in and feel your lower abdomen expand.
🍃Pause and maintain your breath inside your body for a few counts.
🍃Slowly exhale your breath feeling the tension and stress of the week melt away.
🍃As you repeat this, focus on different areas of your body. Release each muscle group in your body, making sure to not forget your pelvic floor!

I hope you have a restful and restorative weekend! 🤍

It’s Tip Tuesday again!

It’s easy to get frustrated when you are trying to make healthy changes in your life but you’re not seeing any results. Give yourself time. It may take 4-6 weeks to see improvement and up to 3 months for significant change. During this time, CONSISTENCY is KEY! Whether you are looking to improve pain, leakage, or strength, progress can take time! It is so easy to get caught up in the social media quick make-overs, but be patient with yourself! You are human and actual change takes time!

I can help you on your journey to regaining confidence and resilience. Call today for your pelvic floor physical therapy initial evaluation.

It’s tip Tuesday…

Did you know that artificial sweeteners can exacerbate or even cause bladder issues? This could be leakage, frequent trips to the bathroom, and/or urgency.

Artificial sweeteners like to hide out in places you may not think about…light yogurt, light juice, sugar free coffee creamers and syrups, low-sugar baked goods, diet/zero calorie soda, ketchup, chewing gum, and cereals.

Some of the artificial sweeteners to be on the look out for include: Aspartame, Sucralose, Acesulfame Potassium (Ace-K), Saccharin, Neotame, and Advantame.

Obviously, a high sugar diet is not ideal either because of the systemic effects sugar can have. You need a balance that works for you and any medical conditions you may have.

As a pelvic floor physical therapist, I deal with A LOT of very personal, very sensitive topics and areas. It is my job to help you feel safe as we navigate these topics together and to not push you beyond what you’re comfortable with. We don’t have to dive into the pelvis right away in order to treat pelvic issues! Your comfort and safety are my number 1 concern!
