SEPTEMBER | SU***DE PREVENTION MONTH

Whether you're active duty, retired, or somewhere in between, you may have spent your career being the person everyone else could count on.

You answered the calls. You walked toward what others ran from. You saw things you were never supposed to see. You kept going when you were exhausted. You learned how to compartmentalize.
You told yourself, “I'm fine.”

But sometimes, the job doesn't stay at the job.

It can follow you home. Into your relationships. Into your sleep.
Into retirement. Into the quiet moments when there are no radios, sirens, calls, or distractions left to keep your mind busy.

And sometimes, the person who needs someone to check on them is the person who has spent their entire career checking on everyone else.

Su***de prevention isn't just about recognizing a crisis. It's about creating a culture where first responders feel safe seeking help before they reach a crisis.

You don't need the right words. You just have to start the conversation.

And if you're worried about someone, ask. Ask how they're really doing. Listen without judgment. Stay connected. Don't assume retirement means the hard stuff is over.

Because retirement doesn't erase trauma. And asking for help isn't a sign that you weren't strong enough to handle the job.

Sometimes, asking for help is how you keep going.

To every active and retired police officer, firefighter, paramedic, dispatcher, corrections officer, and other first responder: You matter beyond the job. Your life matters beyond your service.

Check on your people. Check on yourself.

If you or someone you know is struggling, call the 911 Wellness Group office at 847-550-4520.

We can help you get scheduled for an immediate appointment, either in person or via telehealth.

If you or someone you know is in immediate danger or thinking about su***de, call or text 988 for the Su***de & Crisis Lifeline, or call 911 in an immediate emergency.

You don’t have to be in crisis to ask for help.

You don’t have to wait until you’re having panic attacks.
You don’t have to wait until you can’t sleep.
You don’t have to wait until your relationship is falling apart.
You don’t have to wait until you’re drinking more than you used to.
You don’t have to wait until you’re completely burned out.

Sometimes the warning signs are quieter.

You’re more irritable.
You’re withdrawing from people.
You don’t enjoy the things you used to.
You’re constantly exhausted.
You feel “fine” at work but completely drained when you get home.

That matters, too.

As first responders, you’re trained to push through, compartmentalize, and keep moving.

But taking care of your mental health isn't weakness.
It’s maintenance.

You take your vehicle in before the engine blows.
You maintain your equipment before it fails.
Your mind deserves the same attention.

If you or someone you know is going through a difficult time, please don't wait until things get worse.

Give 911 Wellness Group a call at 847.550.4520. We can help you schedule an appointment in person or through telehealth, whichever feels most comfortable for you.

“Irritable isn’t a character trait. It’s a symptom.” That message stayed with me. One of the best parts of my job as a police social worker is bringing conversations like this into our department. Supporting first responders is just as important as supporting the community they serve. Thank ...

June is PTSD Awareness Month and Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month.

For many first responders, veterans, and the men who dedicate their lives to serving others, the weight they carry often goes unseen. The long shifts, traumatic calls, pressure to stay strong, and silence around mental health can take a lasting toll.

PTSD does not make someone weak. Asking for help does not make someone less capable.
And struggling in silence should never be considered “part of the job.”

This month, we encourage conversations that break stigma, support healing, and remind those suffering that they are not alone. Whether you are a police officer, firefighter, dispatcher, EMS provider, veteran, spouse, or loved one. Your mental health matters.

Checking in on your people can save a life.
Checking in on yourself matters too.

At the 911 Wellness Group, we remain committed to caring for those who dedicate their lives to serving others.
