Do the Nighttime Walk-Through

Walk from your loved one’s bed to the bathroom after dark. What seems harmless during the
day may become a fall hazard at 2:00 a.m.
Look for loose rugs, electrical cords, shoes, pet toys, clutter, uneven flooring, and furniture
that narrows the walkway. Add nightlights, keep a lamp within reach of the bed, and make
sure frequently used items do not require climbing or bending.
Do not wait until after a fall to make the home safer. Most changes take only a few minutes
and cost very little.

Leave the room a little brighter than you found it?

Caregiving Tip Of The Week ❤️

Build the Hurricane Kit Around the Person

A basic hurricane kit is important, but an older adult may need more than bottled water and
flashlights. 🔦

Include current medications, copies of identification and insurance cards, hearing-aid
batteries, glasses, mobility supplies, hygiene products, easy-to-open food, a manual can
opener, chargers, and written emergency contacts.

The City of Lakeland recommends having enough food, water, and essential supplies for at
least 72 hours. Keep everything in containers that can be moved quickly, and make sure more
than one family member knows where the kit is stored.

What Does Aging at Home Really Mean?

When people hear “aging at home,” they often picture medical care.
But sometimes it looks much simpler.
It can mean having someone prepare lunch, help with a shower, run a load of laundry,
provide a safe ride to an appointment, or sit and talk over coffee.
Those ordinary moments can make the difference between simply staying at home and
actually feeling comfortable there.

Don’t Wait for Them to Say They’re Hot

Florida heat can affect older adults faster than families realize. This week, check more than the thermostat.

Make sure your loved one has working air conditioning, easy access to water, lightweight clothing, and a cool place to rest. Watch for unusual weakness, dizziness, headache, nausea, confusion, or shortness of breath.

Some medications and medical conditions can affect how the body handles heat. Never change medications without medical guidance, but ask their doctor how much fluid is appropriate during very hot weather.

A five-minute check-in can prevent a much bigger emergency. ☀️
