I recently evicted a tenant from my rental house. 😮‍💨🙌

I called an attorney but then figured I could do it myself. It was tedious and annoying to say the least. I did not understand the system and at every turn I was self-educating on what forms I needed, how to submit them, how to use the online portals, when to send copies to the tenant, and what happened next after every step. I also had to advocate for myself to the court. It seemed like nothing got signed until I called and brought attention to it. And I had to be the one to carve time out of my work day to go to the post office or the courthouse when I had more important things to do.

This all started to feel vaguely familiar.

I hear similar sentiments from many families as they navigate aging services and the health care system.

"I'm having to learn so much."
"Who offers that?"
"What's the difference?"
"How do I get on that program?"
"I didn't know all of this existed."
"I don't know how to put it all together."
"I don't know what we really need."
"I have to call again and again to get things to happen. I spend half my day on the phone."
"I miss work for her appointments."
"I've been using my own vacation days to fly down to take care of it."

I'm happy to give them free advice and education. Then they often think they can do it themselves. But when I call back to check in, many are still frustrated with navigating and carrying this burden themselves.

Do yourself a favor.
Hire the attorney.
Hire the Aging Life Care Professional.

Let us guide you through the system and shoulder some of the burden so you can just be family.

Recently a colleague pointed out to me that one of our strengths as an was our communication, which has made me more aware of it the last couple weeks. I list "Communication Hub" in descriptions of our services, but I don't think it gets the recognition it deserves. So let's walk through an example of the communication I navigated this week for one client:

🧑‍🧒‍🧒Family - Updated children, step-children, and siblings, some of which have legal authority and decision-making obligations as DPOA/HCS, others who just need high level updates.

👯‍♀️Friends - Updated and coordinated logistics with supportive neighbors.

🤝Colleagues - Provided client history and preferences to expedite onboarding other providers.

👩‍⚕️Medical Professionals - Provided medical history to providers (rehab, physicians, home health). I was able to give the home health wound care nurse notes from the surgery itself within the hospital and the instructions from the follow up.

🧑‍💼Financial Professional/Referral Partner - Updated the referral partner on the client's status for their relationship and so they can schedule a visit for tax prep.

It requires discernment to understand the relationships, obligations, and information to be provided in updates. It takes a lot of ongoing bandwidth to ensure we're updating each party at the right times and with the right level of information. When done right, this level of communication management provides clarity, peace of mind, and makes everyone else's jobs easier. We're here to be your Goldilocks: not too much, not too little, but just right.
