Some experiences are supposed to stay in the past. But with PTSD, the mind and body may continue responding as though the danger is still present.

PTSD can show up through flashbacks and nightmares, but it can also look like irritability, emotional numbness, avoidance, trouble sleeping, feeling constantly on guard, or pulling away from the people and activities you once enjoyed.

Trauma also doesn’t always come from one clearly defined event. For many immigrants, Black individuals, and people of color, trauma may build through repeated experiences of racism, instability, loss, cultural dislocation, marginalization, or the pressure to keep going without enough support.

Children and teens can experience PTSD, too, though their distress may appear through behavior changes, school struggles, physical complaints, withdrawal, anxiety, or emotional outbursts.

At Nexus of Hope, we provide culturally responsive psychiatric care that considers the whole person, including their symptoms, story, culture, family, identity, and lived experience.

Our latest blog explores:

🌿 Common signs and symptoms of PTSD
🌿 How trauma can affect adults, children, and teens
🌿 Why culture and lived experience matter
🌿 Psychiatric and therapeutic treatment options
🌿 When it may be time to reach out for support

You don’t have to wait until things feel unbearable before asking for help.

Therapy can be incredibly helpful. But sometimes, it isn’t the whole plan.

If anxiety, depression, mood changes, sleep problems, or focus issues are still affecting daily life, it may be time to consider another layer of support.

Psychiatric care can help patients better understand what’s happening and explore treatment options that may include medication management when appropriate, supportive psychotherapy, TMS for treatment-resistant depression, or telehealth care.

Needing more support does not mean therapy failed. It does not mean you failed.

It may simply mean your care plan needs to expand.

At Nexus of Hope Psychiatry and Mental Health Wellness, we provide whole-person, culturally responsible mental health care for children, teens, and adults in Burnsville and across Minnesota through telehealth.

Repost from

Adejoke Adedeji, owner of Nexus of Hope, started the psychiatric clinic after a personal experience with mental illness. Now, she serves as a vital resource for Minnesota Nigerians and other people of color seeking culturally inclusive mental health care.

According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, people of color are less likely to receive mental health services compared to those who are white. In 2021, only 39.4 percent of Black or African Americans with mental illness accessed treatment, compared to 47.2 percent of all U.S. adults.

“I did not intend to fall in love with nursing. I thought I would use the nursing profession to help give me stability and I would continue with creativity on the side.”

Adedeji had a personal understanding of the impact of mental illness. “I lost my 15-year-old cousin to su***de in May of 2010,” she said. This experience was devastating to her family. Then, just a few months later, her youngest brother died suddenly from a heart defect.

The way the outside world reacted to each loss illustrated the real need for culturally informed mental health support.

Read more on how Nexus of Hope's founder, Adejoke Adedeji’s own experience with deaths in her family pointed to a clear need for more understanding in the Nigerian community about mental illness and its treatments.
