I have had the privilege of serving on the Board of Directors for the John Austin Peña Memorial Scholarship and walking alongside former State Representative Aaron Peña as we honor the life and memory of his son, John.

John’s life was tragically cut short at just 16 years old after taking tainted drugs. From that unimaginable loss, Aaron and his family have created a lasting legacy of hope and advocacy.

This year marks the 21st year of the scholarship. To date, we have awarded more than $79,000 to 38 recipients. This Friday, we will distribute another $9,000 in scholarships to three amazing students pursuing careers in counseling, addiction treatment, prevention, and related fields at the TAAP Annual Conference in San Antonio, TX.

It is an honor to help keep John’s memory alive by investing in the next generation of professionals who will bring hope and recovery to others.

Twenty-one years later, John’s legacy continues to make a difference.
