Is your lingering shoulder pain just a normal part of getting older, or is it a sign of something more serious?

While minor shoulder soreness is common after heavy lifting or yard work, ignoring persistent pain can lead to increasingly severe joint issues over time. Dr. Johnathon R. McCormick, an orthopedic surgeon at Coastal Orthopedics, shares key signs that it is time to seek a specialist's evaluation:

• Persistent discomfort: Pain that lasts beyond a couple of weeks.
• Sleep disruption: Pain that wakes you from sleep.
• Weakness: Noticeable muscle weakness when lifting your arm.
• Loss of mobility: Difficulty reaching overhead or behind your back.

The good news is that surgery is not always necessary. Most shoulder conditions can be managed successfully with conservative treatments such as physical therapy, anti-inflammatory medications, and targeted injections.

Losing your balance or dropping things more often? The cause may not be where you expect.

Cervical myelopathy happens when the spinal cord in your neck becomes compressed. Since the spinal cord carries signals between the brain and the rest of the body, pressure in this area can affect more than your neck.

Possible signs can include:
• Feeling unsteady while walking
• Dropping objects more frequently
• Difficulty buttoning clothes or writing
• Numbness or tingling in the hands
• Changes in hand strength or coordination

These symptoms have many possible causes, so they do not necessarily mean someone has cervical myelopathy. Understanding the source starts with a medical evaluation.
