What do you say to someone who is grieving?

“I am here with you.”

“I am thinking about you.”

“Would you like to talk about them?”

“I can bring dinner on Tuesday.”

“You do not have to respond. I just wanted you to know I care.”

You do not need perfect words. Your presence matters more.

Many people avoid reaching out to someone who is grieving because they are afraid of saying the wrong thing.

You do not need to fix the pain or find the perfect words. A simple message, a specific offer of help, or a willingness to listen can mean more than you realize.

We once had a husband and wife sharing a room in a nursing home, and the husband was on our service. When he passed, his wife desperately lwanted to be at his funeral, and there was nobody to take her. Technically, our work was done. Her husband had passed, and she was never our patient at all. But....

Hospice care brings together people with different skills but one shared purpose: helping patients and families feel supported.

The hospice team may include nurses, aides, social workers, chaplains, physicians, volunteers, bereavement professionals, and other caring team members.

Each person brings something important to the journey.

Many families wait to ask about hospice because they are afraid it is too soon.

However, asking for information does not mean you have made a final decision. It simply gives your family an opportunity to learn about the support that may be available.

A healthcare provider or hospice professional can help you understand whether hospice may be appropriate for your situation.

Caregivers often feel as though they should be stronger, more patient, more available, or able to handle everything on their own.

But needing help does not mean you are failing.

Resting does not mean you do not care.

Accepting support does not make you less devoted.

Sometimes, allowing others to help is one of the most loving things you can do—for your loved one and for yourself.
