When it comes to recurring UTIs, vaginal health, and even skin health, sometimes we need to look deeper than hygiene alone.

Everything comes back to the gut.

The bacteria living in our gut are connected to the microbial balance throughout the body. When that balance becomes disrupted, it may also affect the vaginal and urinary environments.

This is especially important when we talk about recurring or sex-induced UTIs. Changes in bacteria and vaginal pH can create an environment where unwanted bacteria are more likely to thrive.

So instead of only asking, “How do we get rid of the bad bacteria?” we also need to ask:

“How are we supporting the good bacteria?”

And that conversation starts with the gut. 🌿

At Eastern Wellness, we look at these connections because symptoms rarely exist in isolation. Supporting the internal environment is an important part of supporting balance throughout the body.

Chemotherapy can be lifesaving—but it can also take a significant toll on the body.

Think of it like burning down part of a forest to protect something bigger. The treatment has an important job to do, but afterward, the forest still needs nourishment and support to recover.

From a TCM perspective, chemotherapy can deplete Qi and affect the systems responsible for energy, digestion, resilience, and overall balance.

That’s why supporting the body during cancer treatment is so important.

The goal of integrative care is not to replace chemotherapy, but to support the whole person alongside conventional treatment—helping the body maintain its strength and rebuild what has been depleted.

Cancer care isn’t only about treating the disease. We also have to support the person going through it. 💛

Always discuss complementary therapies with your oncology team.

Menopause weight gain isn't simply about eating too much.

As hormones shift, your metabolism, body composition, sleep, stress response, and even where your body stores fat can change. Estrogen is part of the picture, but insulin, cortisol, thyroid hormones, leptin, and ghrelin also play a role.

From a TCM perspective, we look even deeper at patterns such as Spleen Qi Deficiency, Kidney Yang Deficiency, Liver Qi Stagnation, and Dampness accumulation.

This is why restriction isn't always the answer. Instead of focusing only on the scale, we want to support digestion, blood sugar balance, muscle health, restorative sleep, and stress regulation.

Your body is going through a transition. The goal is to understand what has changed and give it the support it needs to find a new balance.

Is dysbiosis the same thing as an infection? Not exactly.

Think of your gut microbiome like a forest. When weeds begin to take over, the environment becomes imbalanced and healthy growth becomes more difficult. Dysbiosis works in a similar way.

Unlike an acute infection, dysbiosis is an imbalance within the gut microbiome that may contribute to low-grade, chronic inflammation and dysfunction over time.

This is why supporting gut health isn't always about simply eliminating a pathogen. We also need to look at the environment of the gut and work toward restoring balance.

Why can someone feel like they need very little sleep during a manic phase, only to later experience exhaustion, low motivation, and a significant drop in energy?

In this video, I explore bipolar disorder through the lens of Traditional Chinese Medicine and explain why TCM looks at the underlying pattern of imbalance, not only the emotional symptoms.

I also discuss how Traditional Chinese Medicine differentiates between different phases and how modalities such as acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, and Qigong may be used alongside conventional care to support the body's overall balance.

In this video, we talk about:

• Why sleep is essential for restoring Yin
• The TCM perspective on manic and depressive phases
• Why feeling highly energetic doesn't always mean the body has abundant energy
• The relationship between Yin, Yang, and emotional balance
• How TCM approaches the underlying patterns differently during different phases
• The role of acupuncture, herbs, and Qigong as complementary support
• When changes in mood, sleep, and daily function are signs that it's time to seek professional help

Bipolar disorder is a serious mental health condition, and Traditional Chinese Medicine should not replace psychiatric or medical care. If severe mood changes, prolonged insomnia, or changes in daily functioning are occurring, seeking appropriate medical or psychiatric support is important. TCM may be considered as a complementary approach alongside conventional treatment.

Your pulse can tell us much more than how fast your heart is beating.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, we pay attention to the quality of the pulse. Is it deep or shallow? Strong or weak? Tight, forceful, slippery, fast, or slow? Does it still have a “root” when we press deeper?

Each of these qualities gives us clues about what may be happening inside the body—from circulation and stress to constitutional weakness and how much energy the body has to recover.

Pulse diagnosis is one piece of the bigger picture. In TCM, we use these subtle signs to better understand your individual pattern rather than looking at symptoms in isolation.

Your gut and brain are constantly communicating.

Through the vagus nerve, nervous system, gut microbiome, blood flow, and neurotransmitters, what happens in your gut can influence what happens in your brain.

Your gut microbiome also plays an important role in brain chemicals like serotonin and dopamine. This is why supporting gut health isn't only about digestion—it's about supporting the whole system.

At Eastern Wellness, we look at these connections to better understand what may be contributing to your symptoms.

Anxiety and depression don't just affect the mind—they can also reflect what's happening throughout the body.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, emotional health is viewed through the lens of balance. Digestion, the flow of Qi, resilience, and the health of our organ systems all work together to support how we think, feel, and respond to stress.

When these systems become imbalanced, it may show up as brain fog, overthinking, poor sleep, fatigue, digestive issues, or feeling emotionally stuck.

That's why TCM doesn't focus only on the symptoms. It asks a different question: What pattern of imbalance is contributing to how you feel?

Supporting emotional well-being often means supporting the whole body through nourishment, restorative sleep, stress management, healthy digestion, and allowing yourself time to recover.

Healing begins when we look beyond the symptoms and understand what the body is trying to communicate.

Why is dampness so common today?

From a Traditional Chinese Medicine perspective, dampness often develops when digestion isn't functioning optimally and the body has difficulty transforming and eliminating waste.

Several everyday habits may contribute, including a diet high in fried or heavy foods, a sedentary lifestyle, chronic stress, poor gut function, and even spending time in damp or moldy environments.

In TCM, the goal isn't just to eliminate dampness—it's to understand why it's building up in the first place. By supporting digestion, encouraging healthy movement, managing stress, and strengthening the body's natural ability to restore balance, we address the root cause rather than simply the symptoms.

What is the difference between a normal mood swing and bipolar disorder?

While everyone experiences emotional fluctuations from time to time, bipolar disorder can affect much more than mood. It may influence sleep, cognition, decision-making, impulse control, and a person's ability to function in everyday life.

In this video, I explain bipolar disorder from a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) perspective and why we look beyond the emotional symptoms to understand the deeper pattern of imbalance.

You'll learn:

• The difference between everyday mood swings and bipolar disorder
• What Shen, or the spirit, means in Traditional Chinese Medicine
• How Yin, Yang, Qi, Blood, and Essence relate to emotional balance
• Why TCM views bipolar disorder as a combination of deficiency and hyperactivity
• How different organ systems contribute to our emotional and cognitive health
• Why the manic phase may present as feeling wired, restless, impulsive, or unable to sleep
• How TCM looks for the underlying pattern rather than focusing on one symptom alone

In TCM, emotions themselves are not considered bad. The concern is when the body's normal balance becomes disrupted and those emotional patterns begin affecting your health and daily function.

Understanding the pattern allows us to look beyond the diagnosis and ask a deeper question: What is happening within the whole system?
