Attention local advocates, school boards, and city trustees! Did you know that County Boards of Developmental Disabilities (DD) frequently offer capital improvement grants specifically for adaptive signage?

In addition to county grants, cities are successfully using Community Development Block Grants (CDBG) and municipal park improvement funds to install non-verbal communication boards.

Resources at Lakeshore Speech makes the application process simple by providing full documentation, technical specs, and formal quote packages to attach directly to your grant application.

Did you know that where and how you install a playground communication board determines whether it is legally accessible?

A board mounted too high or placed in the middle of a wood-chip pit creates an accidental barrier for children using wheelchairs or mobility devices.

Under the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design:
1️⃣ Reach Ranges (Section 308): Board centerlines should be mounted between 36"–42" for elementary children or 38"–48" for universal wheelchair accessibility.
2️⃣ Clear Floor Space (Section 305): Requires a 30" x 48" firm, stable ground space (like poured-in-place rubber or concrete) directly in front of the board.

Ensure your park installation meets federal accessibility criteria.

Families and communities spend thousands on accessible swings and ramps, but what happens when a child using them wants to say, “My turn!” or “Look at me!”?

Communication is a fundamental human right, yet it is often the missing piece of playground accessibility. While high-tech speech tablets are incredible, they aren't built for sandboxes, splash pads, or sun-drenched slides.

At Resources at Lakeshore Speech, we design permanent, clinical-grade outdoor communication boards that give every child a voice during play, no batteries, Wi-Fi, or charging required.

Recess is for making friends! But for non-verbal students, jumping into a game of tag can feel overwhelming.

Using simple AAC social scripts helps recess aides guide students through turn-taking, asking to join games, and giving peer compliments right on the playground board!
