Barbara “Pud” Pope Sneed, born April 30, 1931, in Gastonia, North Carolina, passed away peacefully May 19, 2026, at the Robin Johnson House in Dallas, North Carolina, surrounded by love and the memories of a life beautifully lived.

With her passing, the world has lost what was quite possibly the greatest Elvis Presley fan to have ever lived. Barbara’s devotion to Elvis was never casual. It was joyful, wholehearted, and unapologetic. One of her favorite stories was that she waited outside the fence at Graceland to catch a glimpse of the King. When he returned home, he got out of the car and greeted his fans. She managed to get his autograph inside her leather purse, a treasure she cherished like a piece of magic for the rest of her life. And before she left, she snagged a loose nail from the fence and kept it inside her hairpin case.

Her love for Elvis was woven into the fabric of her everyday life. She made yearly trips to Memphis to visit family, always finding her way to Graceland as if stopping in to see an old friend. At home, Elvis was everywhere. She slept beneath an Elvis comforter, sipped her morning coffee from an Elvis mug, and decorated her Christmas tree with ornaments honoring the King himself. Her admiration brought her happiness, comfort, and connection throughout her life.

If Barbara could leave behind one final message, it might simply be, “Wise men say… only fools rush in,” because she took her time loving deeply and living fully. And while her family is certainly “all shook up” by her passing, there is comfort in imagining her now finally arriving at the ultimate Graceland reunion. Somewhere beyond this world, Elvis may have just looked up and said, “Well, thank you… thank you very much,” before welcoming one of his most devoted fans home.

But even Elvis came second to the love she held for her family.

Barbara is survived by her daughters, Paulette McCurry and Deborah Badger; granddaughters, Barbi Kayler (Doug Posey) and Tiffany Donnelly (Sam); great-grandchildren, Chad Cotton (Selena), Kameron Donnelly, and Henry Waterman; great-great-granddaughter, Milani Cotton; and many beloved nieces and nephews, including a great niece who held a very special place in her heart, Sarah Bridges.

She was preceded in death by her son, Joe William Sneed; great-grandson, James Mitchell Kayler; brothers, Loyd C. Pope Jr., Billy Lee Pope, and Joe Donald Pope; sisters, Alma P. Davis, Mildred “Mink” McCaslin, and Hilda P. Phillips; and her parents, Madeline Howe Pope and Loyd Clinton Pope.

Barbara will be remembered for her fierce love of family, her unforgettable personality, her loyalty to the things and people she loved, and the joy she found in even the simplest moments. Her story was one of devotion to family, to memories, and yes, to Elvis.

Though her earthly life has ended, those who loved her can imagine her now finally getting front-row seats beside the King himself. And may she find Peace in the Valley.

In accordance with her wishes, no formal services are being held. A private ceremony is being held on Monday, May 25, 2026.

A special thank you to the staff of Carolina Caring and Robin Johnson House.
