Your Body Learned to Keep You Safe

The body is always reading for cues of safety or threat, often outside of awareness.

In moments of pressure or uncertainty, the nervous system may shift into survival states. For some people that looks like overwhelm, urgency, tension, or feeling on edge. For others it may feel like shutting down, fog, numbness, or disconnection.

From a polyvagal lens, these are not signs of something going wrong. They are shifts into sympathetic activation or dorsal vagal protection when something feels too much, too fast, or too uncertain.

In Somatic Experiencing, these responses are understood as the body doing its best to adapt. The work is not about forcing change, but gently tracking what is happening inside, moment by moment, and allowing small experiences of settling to be noticed and supported.

Nothing to fix in the urgency of it. Only a nervous system trying to find its way back to enough safety to soften.

There are little pockets of stillness tucked into my office…spaces that seem to exhale the moment you step into them.

One corner holds the sandtray, lined with tiny figures, each one a doorway, a language beyond words. A place where stories can unfold gently, at their own pace.

Another space hums more quietly…instruments resting, a table prepared for sound and therapeutic touch for trauma recovery. Here, the body is invited into a different kind of listening.

Because trauma doesn’t only live in our thoughts.
It lives in the body…in the sensory world.

In the way certain sounds linger.
In the pull to brace or withdraw from touch.
In the nervous system’s quiet, constant scanning for what feels safe.

And so our work honors that language, too.

Through sand, through sound, through gentle, attuned presence…through noticing what feels supportive and what doesn’t. Always at your pace. Always with choice.

It is such an honor to walk alongside those who enter these spaces at Meadow Grove. To witness what begins to shift when the body is given room to soften, or simply to be as it is.

And to share space with our community at Embodied Wisdom…where restoration unfolds in connection, in rhythm, in collective care.

Both spaces hold something sacred.
Both have their place.

And it warms my heart more than words can fully hold.

You hold so much.

You show up for your patients.
Your team.
Your family.
Your community.

And somewhere along the way, your own story got tucked quietly to the side.

Therapy Intensives are a space where you don’t have to rush your process between meetings or squeeze yourself into a 50-minute hour. Instead of starting and stopping each week, we create intentional, extended time to gently and thoroughly tend to what’s been living beneath the surface.

At Meadow Grove Counseling in Lancaster, PA, I offer Trauma Therapy Intensives integrating EMDR, Somatic Experiencing, Deep Brain Reorienting, and parts-informed work. This approach allows us to move at the pace of your nervous system without forcing, without performing, without pushing.

This may be supportive for you if:
• You function highly in your professional life but feel exhausted underneath
• You’ve done therapy before and feel ready for deeper, focused work
• You want a contained, immersive experience rather than long-term weekly therapy
• You’re carrying experiences your body hasn’t fully metabolized

Intensives can include EMDR and non-EMDR options, depending on what feels aligned. Each one is thoughtfully structured, with preparation and integration support woven throughout.

You don’t have to keep carrying everything alone.

Day 1 of my Deep Brain Reorienting training, and I’m sitting in the Zoom waiting room feeling both excited and grateful. While I truly enjoy in-person trainings, there’s something especially precious about connecting with therapists from the US, Europe, Canada, and other parts of the world, coming together with shared curiosity and intention, even across distance. I can’t wait to learn more about this powerful modality and begin integrating DBR into my practice.
