📢 Blog Alert! Our Director of Laboratory Development, Abby Korman, created a video on the importance of UV Spectral Transmission Rate Testing (USP 671 and USP 661.2) and how the testing process works.

UV testing is utilized in a variety of industries; however, we've recently been testing primarily for the pharmaceutical packaging industry. This test is crucial for this type of packaging, since the contents may be sensitive to light and could deteriorate or ruin the product inside.

UV Spectral Transmission Rate Testing Questions & Answers:

❓ How many samples does a company need to send?

We typically recommend 5 samples, as this is generally sufficient to complete the evaluation.

❓ Is the test completed multiple times to verify the results?

We test the number of samples requested by the customer. Measurements are taken from multiple locations on each package, typically the top, middle, and bottom, where the package size allows, to provide a representative assessment.

❓ How long does it take to get the results?

Customers can generally expect results within 2 business days of our laboratory receiving the samples.

❓ If we have multiple products but plan to use the same packaging materials, perhaps in various sizes, will one test be acceptable?

In most cases, separate testing is recommended for different package sizes. Even when the same material is used, wall thickness often varies between sizes and can affect the results. If a company can demonstrate consistent wall thickness across all sizes, a single test may be sufficient.

❓ Once a company feels that the package is acceptable, when would they need to test the package again and/or what triggers a re-test?
A re-test is recommended whenever there is a change that could affect package performance, including:

📌 a change in the packaging material.

📌 a new mold or tooling.

📌 a modification to the manufacturing process.

📌 any change that could affect wall thickness or package construction.

These changes may alter the package's characteristics and should be evaluated to confirm continued compliance.
