Tonight, Dr. Tyler McCardell, Solanco School District Class of 2013, will return to his alma mater to address the Class of 2026 at graduation.

“It is a great honor to be asked to speak to the graduates,” said Dr. McCardell, an EMS physician and clinical assistant professor of emergency medicine for Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health. “I am incredibly excited to share some of the lessons that I have learned from working in the ER and prehospital environment.”

The 2013 class president and co-valedictorian credits his high school biology teacher, Mr. Brett Miller, for sparking his interest in medicine.

“He helped me develop a love of science. I distinctly remember dissection at the end of AP Biology and reconsidering my career choices, deciding to pursue medicine.”

Dr. McCardell currently provides countywide physician field response through the Penn Med1 emergency response vehicle; coordinates prehospital education; and serves as the medical director for several EMS agencies.

Sometimes caring for a community begins with noticing the quiet struggles. When Amber McComsey, pediatric care manager at Family Medicine Twin Rose, saw patients facing food insecurity, she took action. She partnered with Highmark Wholecare and the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank to bring a free farmers’ market to Columbia Borough, creating a welcoming place where anyone could access fresh, healthy food.

Tomorrow (June 5), the market returns for its second year, offering fresh produce to everyone who stops by. This year also brings an added layer of support. Thanks to a Penn Medicine CAREs grant Amber received, neighbors in need will find everyday essentials such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, diapers, and feminine hygiene products available as well.

Thank you, Amber, for the countless ways you care for our community. Your work nourishes hope for so many.

A new Penn Medicine study of more than 110,000 women found that those who took GLP-1 medications were about 30% less likely to develop breast cancer than those who did not.

Presented yesterday at the 2026 ASCO Annual Meeting by Dr. Elizabeth McDonald, the research opens exciting new doors. While observational, the data suggests these widely used medications might help inhibit tumor growth by reducing systemic inflammation and targeting cancer pathways.

“Ultimately, we want to find better options to prevent breast cancer,” says Dr. McDonald. “We’d love to see the same gains in prevention that we’ve seen in survival rates.”

Up next: Our researchers are actively working to launch a multisite clinical trial to formally test GLP-1s for breast cancer prevention in high-risk individuals.

For years, Janae Allgire (second from right), a behavioral health counselor with Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health, stopped by the Bay Street Community Garden in her Lancaster neighborhood. She enjoyed chatting with the couple who lovingly cared for the space and watching the garden bring neighbors together season after season.

In 2023, when the couple sold the land to the City of Lancaster to preserve it as a permanent green space, Janae joined with others to keep the garden growing. She's been volunteering ever since.

Now, with funding from a Penn Medicine CAREs grant and Lancaster Recreation Commission oversight, Janae is helping expand what the garden can offer the community. The grant supports accessible raised beds and increasing access to fresh food for neighbors, including seniors and families in need.

But the impact reaches far beyond what’s harvested from the soil.

Through her weekly presence at the garden, Janae helps cultivate connection, trust, and belonging, creating a welcoming community space where neighbors gather, relationships grow, and support takes root.

Tim was experiencing daily, intense hip pain when he met with Dr. Matthew Poorman, an orthopaedic surgeon at Penn Medicine Lancaster General Hospital. Dr. Poorman recommended a direct anterior hip replacement, which uses a muscle-sparing approach that may allow patients to have a faster recovery. Tim is now back at his bowling league and living the very active life he loves.

A text message. A quick glance at GPS. Reaching for a snack. In just a few seconds, a distraction behind the wheel can change lives forever.

Distracted driving remains a leading cause of motor vehicle accidents nationwide, contributing to serious injuries and loss of life each year. During Trauma Awareness Month, the Trauma and Acute Care Surgery Team at Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health focused on raising awareness and encouraging safer driving habits through an engaging initiative.

Patients, visitors, and coworkers who pledged to “Ditch the Distractions” received a small Drive Safe Duck as a reminder that staying focused behind the wheel can help save lives.

The team also extended its outreach beyond the hospital, participating in Safety Day in the Square in downtown Lancaster and Farm and Family Safety Days in New Holland and White Horse. Through injury prevention education and hands-on safety demonstrations, they connected with community members of all ages to promote safer choices both on and off the road.

Penn Medicine Lancaster General Hospital recently attained a major milestone in nursing excellence: earning our 6th Magnet® designation. The recognition, awarded by the American Nurses Credentialing Center, is considered the gold standard for nursing excellence and reflects a sustained commitment to high-quality patient care, safety, collaboration, and professional nursing practice.

To recognize the achievement, leaders hosted a celebratory evening at Penn Medicine Park filled with food, games, crafts, and appreciation for the nurses whose work made the designation possible.

For our community, Magnet® signals that patients are receiving care at a hospital where nursing professionals play a leading role in improving outcomes, advancing quality initiatives, and driving innovation across the organization.

Only about 1 percent of hospitals nationwide have earned this distinction six times, and just three in Pennsylvania.

Congratulations to this amazing team!

Every day at locations across Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health, dedicated security professionals help create a safe environment for patients, visitors, and staff. Now, a new group is stepping into some of those important roles.

Led by security training and compliance coordinator Mike Schaeffer (right), the newest members of the Security team began their journey with orientation, learning more about the people and services available to employees across the health system. During a stop at the Employee Service Center at Lancaster General Hospital, employee resource coordinator Kim Hatch shared how the center helps connect team members with guidance and assistance throughout their careers.

We're excited to welcome these employees as they begin making a difference in our community!

This Memorial Day, we pause to honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. At Lancaster General Health and across Penn Medicine, “Missing Man” tables are on display, each element rich with symbolism, remembering the fallen, missing, and imprisoned:

🇺🇲 Red rose: for the blood shed in sacrifice
🇺🇲 Slice of lemon: for the bitter fate of the missing and fallen
🇺🇲 Salt on the plate: for the tears of grieving families
🇺🇲 Inverted glass: for those who can no longer share a meal
🇺🇲 Empty chair: for the brave souls who are not present

Today, as we honor the fallen, we are grateful to all who have served—and continue to serve—and reaffirm our commitment to supporting veterans and military families in our communities and beyond.
