Did you know that glaucoma can be the result of diabetes/elevated blood sugar?

Adults with diabetes are roughly twice as likely to develop primary open-angle glaucoma compared to people without diabetes. High blood sugar damages delicate blood vessels and restricts blood flow to the optic nerve. It also disrupts the eye's fluid drainage system, which raises intraocular pressure.

Did you know????

Zonulin is a protein that regulates the permeability of the intestinal lining by controlling tight junctions between cells. High levels of zonulin cause these junctions to loosen, leading to increased intestinal permeability, commonly known as "leaky gut," which allows toxins and bacteria to enter the bloodstream.

Key Aspects of Zonulin and Leaky Gut:
Mechanism: Elevated zonulin acts on the gut lining (epithelia), causing the "tight junctions" (microscopic seals between cells) to open.
Triggers: The two main drivers for high zonulin release are gluten (specifically gliadin) and certain bacterial infections or gut dysbiosis.
Associated Conditions: High zonulin is linked to celiac disease, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Crohn's disease, and autoimmune disorders.
Health Impact: A "leaky gut" caused by excessive zonulin can lead to chronic inflammation and systemic issues, as foreign substances enter the bloodstream.
Testing & Management: Nutritional approaches like a gluten-free diet and sometimes probiotics are used to manage it.

Potential Supporting Interventions
Some studies and practitioners suggest that managing zonulin-mediated permeability can be supported by:
Diet: A strict gluten-free diet is the most recognized way to reduce zonulin production.
Nutrients: Certain compounds, including zinc, vitamin D, probiotics, and collagen, may help maintain the gut lining..
