This September, during Underground Railroad Month, join The Underground Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania for an extraordinary evening celebrating courage, history, culture, and the continuing work of preserving Pennsylvania's Underground Railroad story.

Quest for Freedom, our 2026 Fundraising Gala, will feature Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and author Eugene Robinson as our keynote speaker, along with an evening of dinner, music, history, and fellowship.

But this evening is about more than a celebration.

It's about building the future.

Every ticket purchased and every sponsorship helps support the work of the Underground Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania as we preserve these stories and move closer to opening the doors of a museum dedicated to telling them.

Betty Hurdle believed that lasting change begins with ordinary people who care enough to act. Throughout her life, she championed education, housing, neighborhood revitalization, historic preservation, and community engagement, leaving an enduring impact on Lancaster County.

To honor her legacy, the African American Historical Society of South Central Pennsylvania is proud to launch the Betty Hurdle Social Justice Blog.

Our inaugural article, "The Woman Who Inspired This Blog," introduces readers to the remarkable woman whose lifelong commitment to justice continues to inspire this new series.

The next presentation in the Columbia 300 Speaker Series will be at 6:30 PM in the National Watch & Clock Museum. Randy Harris and Peter Green will discuss the use of Columbia's "above ground" railroad to move freedom seekers toward Philadelphia.

Step into history with AAHSSCPA member Darlene Colon as she portrays Lydia Hamilton Smith, the longtime confidante and business partner of Thaddeus Stevens.

Through this powerful first-person presentation, Lydia Hamilton Smith will share the story of freedom seekers who escaped Belle Vue Farm in Havre de Grace, Maryland, and became part of the courageous Christiana Resistance.
