Public safety and public health work hand-in-hand through trust, mutual respect, and direct frontline integration. This past Friday at the Second Chance PA Annual Awards Dinner, it was our distinct privilege to honor Officer Jason Skiles of the East Hempfield Township Police Department.

Featured here is Officer Skiles alongside our dedicated co-responder, Leanna. Out on the street, this partnership allows officers to focus on community safety, while our peer co-response team steps in to navigate complex crises—providing immediate, real-time navigation for substance use disorders, mental health challenges, housing instability, and family support right when it matters most.

We extend our highest congratulations to Officer Skiles on his well-deserved award, and our deepest gratitude to his family for their legendary legacy of 77 consecutive years of law enforcement service to Lancaster County.

Thank you, Officer Skiles, for locking arms with our team on the frontline to build a safer, healthier community. 🦅🏛️

Every single step forward matters. 👣✨

Sometimes, walking side-by-side with someone in our community means guiding them through their entire recovery journey. Other times, it means stepping in to help them clear just one final hurdle that stands in the way of their next chapter.

Recently, an individual connected with our Specialty Programs team. She had already done the incredibly hard work and celebrated one year in recovery! She was ready for independence, but a single hurdle was stalling her progress.

Our team stepped in to help her navigate that exact barrier, and we are thrilled to share that she officially moved into her brand-new apartment this past week! 🔑🏠

This work is not possible without local organizations like Off The Streets Lancaster PA who make miracles like this possible.

Whether we are walking with someone for a single day or a single year, we are honored to be a part of the network that helps our neighbors rebuild their lives.

"I sat in front of a panel of legal professionals and pleaded my case on why I thought I deserved a chance..."

When Kyle first connected with our Specialty Programs team in February of 2021, he was navigating a severe four-month long substance use and medical crisis. All while facing a complex legal history dating back to when he was 16 years old. With felonies on his record, and a recent DUI charge, facing the justice system felt incredibly hopeless.

The photo of Kyle on the left captures a moment right before his sobriety began—a real reflection of the exhausting, siloed battle he was fighting.

When it came time for Kyle to stand before a panel of legal professionals for the ARD diversion program, one of our Certified Recovery Specialists (CRS) stood right there alongside him.

Our team didn't just provide transportation to his hearings; they provided a voice of advocacy. By speaking directly to Kyle's dedication to change, our CRS helped bridge the gap between healthcare and the justice system, helping secure an approval for a diversion outcome that previously felt completely out of reach.

Today, Kyle is 26 years old, celebrating over five and a half years of continuous recovery, and living a life completely beyond his wildest dreams as a husband, an uncle, a brother, and a father.

Kyle’s story and countless others are a direct result of what happens when Certified Recovery Specialists, hospital systems, and local legal professionals break down organizational walls to build a true community of care.

Thank you for sharing your journey, Kyle. You are living proof of what is possible when a community collaborates and chooses support over stigma. 🤝

When someone makes the brave choice to seek help, having a safe place to sleep, a reliable ride to appointments, and a trusted person to help guide the way makes all the difference in the world.

Housing, transportation, and case management are the foundational pieces of human dignity that give our neighbors the space to finally catch their breath, feel secure, and focus entirely on healing.

This beautiful network only works because our local community partners care just as deeply as we do. Thank you for always answering our calls, opening your doors, and collaborating so intentionally.

To the participants showing up to do this hard work: your grit inspires us every single day, and we are so honored to walk shoulder-to-shoulder with you. And to our staff: thank you for bringing your absolute heart and diligence to the front lines every day to make sure nobody walks alone. 💙

Community Connections Create Change. 💙
Real, lasting community work never happens alone. Our partnership with Hand Up Partners is such a beautiful example of what can happen when different teams pull their strengths together to care for the same neighbor.

Hand Up Partners is out there every single day doing the hard, beautiful work of building trust on the streets, listening to our unhoused neighbors, and breaking down the barriers that keep people stuck. Their whole mission is centered on giving someone a hand up, not a handout. When they find someone who is ready for a change, our Specialty Programs team steps right in to bring extra recovery support, case management, and resources to help them build that next step.

Rebecca Saner from Hand Up Partners put it so perfectly:
“That’s what I appreciate about this partnership—it allows us to focus less on who gets credit and more on making sure people get what they need.”

This perspective is everything to us. When you move past the logos and the titles, you get to stay entirely focused on the human being standing right in front of you, making sure they get the love and dignity they deserve.

When we trust each other, talk openly, and lean on one another, we build a wider, safer front door to support right when someone is ready for it. We are so incredibly grateful for Hand Up Partners and for every organization walking alongside us to clear the path forward. 🤝💙

Anchor Lancaster is so grateful for the many community partners who join us in the dining room each morning!

This Wednesday, we were blessed to welcome partners from Tenfold, Valley Youth House, Lancaster Hub, and Blueprints. Their presence, care, and willingness to connect with our guests are a beautiful reflection of what it means to love our neighbors and serve our community together.

We are thankful for each organization and the important work they do alongside us. Together, we are building relationships, offering hope, and helping our neighbors take the next steps toward a brighter future.

When you see a police vehicle pull up, you probably don’t expect Leanna to step out with them. 🚔🤝

But that is exactly what a supportive, collaborative community response looks like.

Leanna works directly alongside our local law enforcement partners, stepping onto the scene when a neighbor is navigating a mental health crisis, substance use, or one of the hardest days of their life. Her role isn’t to enforce—it’s to listen, share resources, offer unshakeable peer advocacy, and build immediate pathways to stability.

“Law enforcement and I may have different roles, but we're working toward the same goal, helping our community. At the heart of what we do, we are here to love people. Sometimes that starts with simply showing up.”

We are incredibly grateful to West Lampeter Township Police East Hempfield Township Police Department Manheim Township Police Department Borough of Strasburg PA for collaborating with our co-responder teams every single day to ensure no one in our neighborhood has to face a crisis alone. 💙

[Part 2 of 3] 🧵 • “I spent months in the hospital. My sister was standing over the bed and was crying. That was incredibly difficult. But she was beyond supportive of me.”

Waking up to a months-long hospital stay and facing deep depression was incredibly difficult. But backed by the support of his family and a direct care connection, Drew transitioned into intensive outpatient care. After a year of intense dedication and hard work, he went completely full-circle to become a Certified Recovery Specialist.

This is how our story ends—and where real community change begins. For Recovery Month, our team member Drew is wrapping up his 3-part journey by showing us what true full-circle hope looks like.

After surviving a massive medical crisis and finding his own footing in treatment, Drew realized his purpose wasn't just to recover; it was to stand on the front lines and build a bridge for the next person.

Today, as a Certified Recovery Specialist, he walks right back into those exact same hospital environments to meet individuals in crisis and help them coordinate their own pathways to stability.
