Can we stop cancer before it starts? That’s part of the goal of cancer interception—catching cancer cells as they begin to develop, then halting or reversing the process.

At Penn Medicine, our teams are leading the charge to redefine the future of oncology, shifting the entire field from managing disease to stopping it in its tracks.

New findings presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology 2026 Annual Meeting showed that a CAR T-cell therapy called Breyanzi is producing response rates far higher in everyday practice than what was seen in the original clinical trial—offering fresh hope for patients living with relapsed or refractory chronic lymphocytic leukemia who have run out of other options.

Emily Tomasulo, DO, an assistant professor of Hematology-Oncology at Penn Medicine, said the results have exceeded expectations.

Last year, the neurosurgery team at Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health performed its first awake craniotomy. During this highly specialized brain surgery, the patient is awakened during the procedure to respond to speech and movement prompts.

Neurosurgeon Eric Hintz, MD, describes the surgery as “the right surgery for a very specific patient with tumors in a very specific set of locations.”

The groundbreaking moment marked a major milestone for the team, which has performed additional cases since. Once only available in major academic centers, awake craniotomy is now transforming surgical care in Lancaster County.

Specialists, including (from left to right) Dr. Hintz, anesthesiologist Ansar Khan, MD, neuropsychologist Jesse Main, PsyD, and the entire surgical support team, make it possible to bring this advanced neurosurgical technique to our community.

A devoted family man, community helper, and longtime firefighter and fire chief at Witmer Fire Protective Association, Mike Creamer embodies service.

His wife Desiree, a dedicated oncology nurse and assistant nurse manager at the Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute, has spent her career caring for patients with compassion and skill. When Mike was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and began treatment at Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health, the community immediately stepped forward.

Dear friend Dereck Duffy, along with partners Wayne and Kim McDade of Wayne's Towing & Recovery helped Desiree spark a grassroots fundraising effort: one that grew far beyond expectations. What began as a simple call to support a beloved family quickly became a movement to support all AML and blood cancer patients at the Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute.

Donors across Lancaster County rallied, proving how powerful generosity can be when a community acts together. As fundraising neared the endowment threshold, Wayne and Kim McDade made a final lead gift—a heartfelt act that pushed the fund across the finish line.

Their contribution ensured the fund would become endowed, guaranteeing long-term, sustainable support for patients facing financial hardship during treatment. Today, the Creamer Family Acute Myeloid Leukemia Fund is officially established and will provide assistance for transportation, prescriptions, food, rent, childcare, and other essential needs within the Ann B. Barshinger patient community.

Bemotrizinol, an ingredient in sunscreens available abroad that makes them more long-lasting, is being reviewed by the FDA.

“It’s been since 1999 that a new ingredient was approved for use, so [we’re] super excited that we’re making progress in this,” said Joanna Walker, MD, director of Penn’s Rare and Advanced Skin Cancer Clinic and an associate professor of Dermatology.

She also discussed best practices when it comes to protecting skin, including using sunscreens that are SPF 30 or higher and ensuring there’s a thick layer on the skin for best protection.

If you have the opportunity to meet Laurie Phillips at the Center for Breast Health on Wednesday mornings, you will immediately experience her warmth and genuine caring.

For the past 24 years, Phillips has supported patients, families, and staff at Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health, first volunteering at Women & Babies Hospital before bringing her compassion and welcoming spirit to the Center for Breast Health.

She worked as a registered nurse for 28 years, retiring in 2001. But caring for others has never simply been a profession for her; it’s who she is. Today, she continues to make an impact not only at Lancaster General Health, but also in her community at Woodcrest Villa, where she serves as a new resident ambassador and member of the Spiritual Life committee.

Phillips lights up when talking about her love of meeting people and shared that volunteering enriches her life and brings tremendous satisfaction. We are grateful for her and all of our amazing volunteers.

Summer is the time for backyard barbecues and pool cookouts, but if you’re undergoing treatment for cancer, foods like hamburgers, coleslaw, and brownies may have lost their appeal.

Seasonal foods filled with fluids or other healthy vitamins and minerals may help. For example, "One cup of watermelon contains over one-half cup of water, not to mention vitamins and minerals like vitamins C and A, magnesium, and potassium," said Carly Roop, RD, a clinical dietitian specialist at Penn Medicine.
