There’s a point where working on yourself can quietly turn into believing you’re never quite finished.

You start monitoring every reaction. Analyzing every trigger. Trying to communicate perfectly, regulate perfectly, set boundaries perfectly, heal every old wound and become the healthiest possible version of yourself.

And somehow, self-improvement starts feeling a lot like self-criticism wearing better clothes.

You are allowed to know you have things to work on and still enjoy who you are right now. You’re allowed to have an imperfect reaction without turning it into a character flaw. You’re allowed to have a bad day without immediately asking what you need to “fix.”

Mental health isn’t a lifelong assignment to finally become acceptable.

Sometimes the healthiest thing you can do is stop evaluating yourself for a minute and just go live your life. 💙

When the treatments you’ve tried aren’t giving you the relief you hoped for, that doesn’t mean you’re out of options.

As a Psych NP, I want patients to know that mental health care continues to evolve, and treatments like Spravato® are giving us additional ways to approach treatment-resistant depression.

If you’ve felt stuck in the same cycle with your depression, it may be time for a different conversation with your provider. There may be more options available than you realize. 💙

Dolly has spent decades being unmistakably Dolly. Big hair. Big personality. Big opinions. Big generosity. And very little interest in shrinking any of it to make herself easier for other people to understand.

There’s actually a mental health lesson in that.

Healing isn’t about sanding down every part of yourself until no one can criticize you. It’s learning the difference between kindness and people-pleasing. Between generosity and having no boundaries. Between self-awareness and constantly editing yourself for acceptance.

You can disappoint someone and still be a good person. You can be misunderstood without launching a campaign to explain yourself. You can hear criticism without immediately assuming you need to change. And you can stop asking, “Do they like me?” long enough to ask, “Do I like who I am around them?”

Maybe becoming healthier isn’t about becoming less of yourself.

Maybe it’s finally feeling safe enough to be more of who you already are. 💙

There’s a very specific kind of tired where you’re not quite ready to go inside yet.

So you sit in the driveway.

Maybe the car is still running. Maybe the song ended five minutes ago. Maybe you’re scrolling your phone without actually reading anything.

Because the second you open that door, you’re available again.

Someone might need dinner. A question answered. A problem solved. A decision made. A conversation had. Even if you live alone, there’s laundry, mail, dishes, emails and the hundred little things waiting for your attention.

And for those few minutes in the car, nobody needs anything from you.

If you do this, you’re apparently in very good company.

Sometimes the tiny ways we decompress don’t look like “self-care” at all. Sometimes they look like sitting in the driveway for 12 extra minutes before carrying in the groceries.

And maybe we should talk about those things more.

There comes a point when you realize you’ve spent a ridiculous amount of energy trying to prevent other adults from experiencing the consequences of their own choices.

You reminded them. Followed up. Checked in. Reworded the text. Gave the benefit of the doubt. Filled in the silence. Made excuses for them. Tried to figure out what they were thinking. And somehow, you ended up carrying the emotional workload for a conversation you weren’t avoiding.

At some point, you get tired.

Not angry. Not cold. Not trying to “teach anyone a lesson.”

You just stop doing both people’s jobs.

If something is wrong, you can tell me. If you need something, you can ask. If I hurt you, we can talk about it. But I’m no longer going to investigate a change in your punctuation, decode your silence, or chase you around trying to extract information you’ve decided not to communicate.

You’re a grown-up. I’m a grown-up.

And apparently, this is my letting adults be adults era.

But you do you. 😂

Sometimes self-awareness is the easy part. 😂

You can know you avoid conflict. Know you people-please. Know you overthink what someone meant, pull away when you need reassurance, or say yes when every part of you wants to say no. You can even laugh about it and think, “Love this pattern for me.”

But recognizing an unhealthy relationship pattern and knowing how to change it are two different things.

That’s where the actual work begins: noticing the pattern while it’s happening, understanding what’s underneath it, and practicing a different response even when the old one feels safer or more familiar.

Self-awareness matters. But the goal isn’t to become incredibly good at identifying all the ways you get in your own way.

It’s to finally learn how to get out of them.

Some things are hard to hear because they ask something of us.

It can feel validating to learn about boundaries, people-pleasing, resentment, relationship patterns, and communicating your needs. But eventually, what you learn has to become something you practice.

That might mean saying what you need before you’re angry that someone didn’t know. Saying “that doesn’t work for me” without writing a closing argument. Setting a boundary and tolerating the discomfort that comes afterward. Accepting that someone may not like your boundary and realizing that doesn’t automatically make it wrong.

Mental health care isn’t only about developing healthier thought patterns. It’s also about practicing healthier behaviors because of them.

Sometimes the thing you’ve been waiting for someone to give you permission to do is the very thing you have to give yourself permission to do.

We’re living in an instant-gratification world, and apparently our bodies did not get the memo. Rude. 😂

We can spend years building habits, running on too little sleep, living under chronic stress, barely moving, or putting ourselves last, then make a healthy change on Monday and wonder why we don’t feel like a completely different person by Friday.

Real change usually isn’t dramatic. It’s consistent. Your sleep, movement, nutrition, hydration, stress levels, and time outside can all support your physical health and your mental health. And that relationship goes both ways. When we feel better mentally, caring for our bodies often becomes easier too.

So if you’re doing the work and wondering why you’re not “there” yet, keep going. Progress doesn’t have to be immediate to be happening.

Give your body time to catch up with the decisions you’re making for it. 💛
