Indwelling Thumb & Kinesiology Tape 🖐️✨

Did you know that some children keep their thumb tucked into their palm during play, grasping, or daily activities? This is often referred to as an indwelling thumb and can impact hand development, grasp patterns, fine motor skills, and overall hand function.

Kinesiology tape can be a helpful tool to provide proprioceptive input, increase awareness of thumb positioning, and encourage a more open thumb posture during functional activities. One of the great things about kinesiology taping is that there are many different ways to tape depending on the child’s needs. Techniques may focus on promoting thumb abduction, encouraging extension, improving web space, facilitating muscle activation, or simply providing sensory feedback and awareness.

I love incorporating quick and easy taping techniques during therapy sessions that can immediately support hand positioning while children participate in play, fine motor tasks, crafts, dressing activities, and other functional skills. These simple strategies can make a big difference in helping little hands explore and engage more efficiently.

Remember, tape is just one tool in the toolbox. Lasting progress comes from combining taping with strengthening, coordination activities, sensory input, and meaningful play experiences tailored to each child. 💙

Simple activity, big benefits! 🎯

Bringing the hula hoop over the head and stepping through works on motor planning, coordination, body awareness, balance, flexibility, and bilateral coordination. It also challenges children to grade their movements and figure out how their body moves through space.

As a bonus, this movement pattern mimics dressing skills by practicing the coordination needed to put on and take off clothing items independently.

Learning through play is always our favorite way to build skills! 💙

The Moro reflex is one of the body’s early protective reflexes, often called the “startle reflex.” While it is important in infancy, a retained Moro reflex can continue to impact regulation, coordination, body awareness, posture, and motor patterns as children grow.

One way this may show up is through automatic upper body responses when the feet are positioned differently:

▫️ When attempting a “pigeon-toed” position (toes turned inward), you may notice the elbows move outward and the palms rotate inward, creating a slight “scarecrow-like” posture.

▫️ When attempting a “duck feet” position (toes turned outward), you may notice the palms rotate upward and outward.

These associated movements can sometimes suggest the body is relying on reflex-driven patterns rather than isolated, controlled motor movements.

A retained Moro reflex may contribute to:
• Difficulty with regulation
• Sensitivity to movement, sound, or touch
• Challenges with balance and coordination
• Poor body awareness
• Emotional overreactions or “fight or flight” responses
• Difficulty grading movements and posture

Remember: reflex integration is not about “fixing” a child — it’s about helping the nervous system build stronger foundational patterns for regulation, movement, and daily function. ✨

Trust me… behind every “successful” therapy video are moments of tears, protests, breaks, redirection, and a little one working harder than most people realize. Even through the tears and occasional smiles, he’s working hard on balance, coordination, body awareness, muscle grading, regulation, and developmental milestones. Progress isn’t always pretty, but every small step matters.

Behind every swing, obstacle course, sensory bin, and tiny moment of connection… there’s so much development happening 🤍✨

Play is never “just play.”
It’s regulation.
It’s confidence.
It’s motor skills, problem solving, communication, body awareness, and trust being built one small moment at a time.

This is the heart behind Beeyond Play 🫶

Executive functioning isn’t just worksheets and sitting at a table 🧠✨

Something as simple as walking on a balance beam while balancing a beanbag on your head is actually a complex executive functioning task!

Children are working on:
• Sustained attention
• Impulse control
• Motor planning
• Working memory
• Self-monitoring
• Cognitive flexibility
• Body awareness & regulation

The brain and body are constantly communicating, adjusting, planning, and organizing movement in real time. That’s why movement-based activities can be so powerful for learning and development 🤍👣

What can a retained Moro reflex look like in older children?

• Easily overwhelmed by sensory input (noise, movement, busy environments)
• Difficulty with emotional regulation
• Poor coordination or clumsiness
• Challenges with attention and focus
• Anxiety or “fight or flight” responses
• Fatigue or difficulty maintaining posture

A retained Moro reflex keeps the nervous system on high alert, making it harder for children to regulate, focus, and coordinate their movements. Movement-based OT can help support integration and regulation. ✨
