09/10/2026
September 10, 2026 is Su***de Prevention Awareness Day.
This year’s theme is “Changing the Narrative”
The world of sport is historically reactive, waiting until we see the struggle before stepping in to support the person struggling
Changing the narrative around prevention means getting proactive in how we support our athletes
🤍 Implement policy and procedure for mental health concerns. Consult with professionals like your counseling or student support team and local mental health professionals that work with athletes to develop a mental health emergency action plan.
🤍 It starts at the top. Don’t just train your staff once a year, support your staff. Well supported and well regulated coaches, support staff, and administrators will be better equipped to serve their athletes.
🤍 Build your referral network. Connect with your student support team and local mental health providers who work clinically with athletes. Know when to refer and who you’re referring to. When an athlete discloses a mental health concern, where do you turn next?
🤍 Create a safe culture where every student knows that they can trust you to guide them toward the help they need.
