Body image for student athletes is about more than appearance—it’s also about the thoughts, beliefs, and pressure tied to sport, performance, and comparison.

These journal prompts are designed to help you reflect on your relationship with your body, challenge unhelpful beliefs, and reconnect with your body for what it does—not just how it looks.

Healing body image doesn’t come from changing your body. It begins with shifting your mindset, practicing self-compassion, and learning to value yourself beyond appearance or performance.

Save this for your next journaling session šŸ“

For many student athletes, summer can bring more than excitement for the season ahead — it can also bring pressure around body image, appearance, performance, and comparison.

When your body is constantly being viewed through the lens of athletics, it’s easy to start believing your value is tied to how lean, toned, or ā€œdisciplinedā€ you look. But your body is doing far more than being looked at.

It’s carrying you through conditioning, practices, recovery, classes, competition, stress, growth, and everyday life.

You do not have to earn rest.
You do not have to fear fueling yourself.
And you do not need to shrink your body to prove your dedication as an athlete.

Athlete mental health matters just as much as physical performance šŸ’™šŸ§”

So Spring season just ended and your not sure where to go next. Here’s our tips to take the off-season transition to the next level:

šŸ’¤ Prioritize Rest and Recovery.

āž”ļøMake sure to take care of any nagging aches, pains, and injuries. You need a break after a long season to give your mind and body space to heal. It can be tempting to jump right back into training but jumping in too soon might be doing more harm than good.

šŸ’ Meaningfully reflect on the season.

āž”ļøNow is the perfect time to flex that mental muscle. Training breaks can be beneficial time to work the mental reps. Ask yourself what went well and what could have gone better? What would you have done differently now that you have different perspective? Were there areas that you excelled at your game or areas that you struggled? Did you hit your goals?

šŸ… Celebrate the victories.

āž”ļøThe truth of sport is that in most cases, only one team ends on top. The it can be really easy to harp on the negative once the season ends. Make sure your reflection isn’t just critical, but acknowledges your strength and growth from the season too. What’s something you’re proud of from this year?

šŸŽÆ Make new goals.

āž”ļø You set goals every season, but what do you do with them when the season is done? Take some time to reorient those goals. Think about important to prioritize in the short term to recover from the season. Then shift your focus to the long term and anticipate what you’d like to accomplish moving forward. Goal setting can help you build a game plan to tackle what’s ahead.

What Dos and Don’ts are we missing for off season?

āš”ļø pregame focus
āš”ļø warmup energy

āš”ļø game day mindset

A reminder for student athletes: your mental health is just as important as your physical performance.

You don’t have to have everything figured out in school, sport, and life to be doing enough.

You don’t have to be ā€œonā€ all the time to be a strong athlete.
And you don’t have to push through everything alone.

Mental health in student athletes isn’t just about performance—it’s about emotional wellbeing, recovery, and sustainability in and out of sport.

It shows up in the small moments like:
✨ taking a rest day without guilt
✨ setting boundaries with training, school, or social life
✨ asking for help when you’re overwhelmed
✨ choosing recovery instead of overtraining
✨ giving yourself grace after a bad game, meet, or practice

Being a student athlete means you’re constantly balancing pressure, expectations, and identity. Mental health support matters in all of it.

Progress doesn’t always look like PRs or wins. Sometimes it looks like:
āš”ļø getting through a tough school day after practice
āš”ļø showing up even when motivation is low
āš”ļø choosing rest because your body and mind need it
āš”ļø bouncing back after setbacks without tearing yourself down

If you’re in a heavy season right now, focus on one small supportive choice for your mental health today. That counts in sport and in life.

And if things feel steady right now, check in on a teammate. You never know who’s silently struggling.

Your worth isn’t just your performance. You are more than your sport šŸ¤

Hey athlete šŸ‘‹

This can be a totally confusing and overwhelming time in your career.

The end of sport as you know it is a transition that every athlete experiences and to put it lightly, it’s complicatedšŸ˜µā€šŸ’«

Here’s 5 totally normal things you might experience when your career comes to an end:

šŸ‘‰ A deep sadness because things are changing. Your support system might look different. Your identity has centered around this. Maybe you weren’t ready to turn the page yet.

šŸ‘‰ Anger and Frustration. Only a few athletes really get to have the ā€œidealā€ ending to their careers. Maybe you lost the game or didn’t have your best performance. Maybe injury ended your career too soon. Perhaps there’s a sense of regret or a wish that you had more time.

šŸ‘‰Joy that feels out of place. For some athletes, the end of their careers marks a new era of freedom. A weight lifted off of their shoulders and a sudden sense of relief. Some athletes feel like they should feel sad, even when they don’t.

šŸ‘‰Anxiety or dread for the future. So many athletes feel like they forgot what it was like to just be a person. You forget how to work out without a plan or a packet. You’re used to the validation and gratification that comes from write-ups and broken records. We live in a highly structured world, only to have that structural support taken away overnight.

To all of our athletes navigating this transition, you’re not alone.
