While we are all experiencing the COVID-19 pandemic, it has become abundantly clear that there are two ongoing epidemics, racism and mental health. After recognizing the racial disparities, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) director, Dr. Rochelle Walensky stated the department’s efforts regarding the effects of racism on health in addition to implementing the appropriate solutions. F&K appreciates Dr. Walensky raising awareness of this concern to move the needle forward.

"The pandemic illuminated inequities that have existed for generations and revealed for all of America a known, but often unaddressed, epidemic impacting public health: racism," Walensky said.

As the first lady for 8 years, Michelle Obama was used to the spotlight and now uses her podcast series on Spotify to continue connecting with Americans. Her first podcast, posted on July 16th of this year, introduced the series and had a very special guest, her husband. During their discussion, she spoke out about the low-grade depression she encountered while in quarantine. The response to her podcast revealed how this was not uncommon. Former first lady Michelle Obama talked about having “low-grade depression” on her podcast. Experts say when people like Michelle Obama speak about their own experiences, it can have “tremendous impact” on educating the public and reducing the stigma surrounding mental health conditions.

What is stigma and do you know when it has affected your actions?

We bring this up because stigma is more commonly known as a negative belief surrounding a specific issue, with it being a deterrent for those who might seek mental health treatment. Each community is impacted differently and this can be seen through our everyday actions. For example, those in the African American community are more likely to use the emergency room than a mental health specialist for the same reason. This is the effect of stigma since going to the hospital is deemed as necessary but going to mental health treatment is not and looked down upon.

To help combat stigma, start the conversation about mental health, listen to those who trust you with their most personal battles, and always show compassion!

While stigma may be a barrier in the African American community—you can contribute to breaking that stigma down. Here are a few ways to get started.

“Despite the needs, only one in three Black or African American adults who need mental health care receive it.” This line speaks volumes as it reveals the struggle to take the step towards treatment and recovery. With stigma playing an active role in making decisions, what do you consider the easiest ways to overcome this obstacle?

Here is a couple to spark some more thinking:
1. Do research on treatment, practices, specific professionals in the field, and whether they take your insurance.

2. When finding treatment options, what questions will you ask the mental health professionals as you look for your fit? Think about what will make you feel comfortable, heard, and respected as the NAMI article writes.

Throughout the series, we hope to educate and convey how important your mental health is. Look out for the first post next Thursday!
