Experiencing shoulder instability or a labral tear? Focus on strengthening the muscles which keep the shoulder in socket.

Exercises like banded pull-aparts, rows, lateral pulldowns, and weighted shoulder protractions will help you to improve shoulder movement quality and progress toward your higher-level goals.

As a sports PT, I commonly see shoulder pain related to shoulder instability in athletes and active individuals. 🤸‍♀️

These people describe their shoulder as feeling “loose”, “unstable”, “pinching”, or like it may “slip” during certain movements.

If this is happening, you don’t necessarily need surgery to fix these issues. Shoulder pain and instability often improve significantly through targeted strength and movement training. 💪🏼

Aside from just using inserts to help solve issues stemming from your flat feet, you should also be working on actively strengthening your body’s control of the arch in your foot! 👣

Can you stand with both feet on the ground and push your big toes into the floor, creating a nice arch?

Can you maintain a single leg balance while reaching forward and side-to-side?

Try it out, and reach out for more advice!

Do a quick check to see if your flat feet are causing problems in your sport 👀

When doing a single-leg balance, do you find that your ankle is rotating in?

If so, you’ll need to focus on improving your ankle and arch strength to fight against the collapsing rotation and improve your alignment. 💯

Flat feet can lead to pain—during running and sports as well as day-to-day life—because they make it more difficult to have a solid alignment from your hips down to your feet.

When your feet collapse, it creates a rotational force in the ankle which makes it more likely that your knee will rotate inwards, leading to your hip joint to rotate in as well.

As a sports PT, I commonly see ankle, foot, and arch pain associated with flat feet. Because flat feet are largely genetic, many people assume there’s little they can do about them. In reality, athletes can build strength and control through targeted exercises that help compensate for flat feet.

Exercises which help to improve the the stability of your ankle and foot arch muscles can help control your body movements and ultimately get rid of that pain!

Strong feet support strong movement 👣💪

Building strength, control, and stability in your foot and ankle help your body to be able to handle higher levels of activity.

Start where your foot and ankle begin to lose position or control. Build awareness, strengthen the muscles that support movement, and gradually progress as your stability improves.

Practice these small steps:
✔️ Arch lifts
✔️ Assisted single-leg balance
✔️ Single-leg control progressions

Flat feet aren’t automatically the problem. Often, pain shows up when the foot and ankle are being asked to tolerate more than they’re currently prepared for.

The focus isn’t a “perfect” arch — it’s creating stronger movement patterns, improving ankle strength, and building confidence in every step.

Stronger feet → stronger movement → better performance. 🔥

Flat feet are often genetic, but pain usually isn’t caused by the shape of the foot alone. Problems often develop when the foot and ankle struggle to control load during activities like running, jumping, and sports.

Signs you may need more support:

☑️You feel pain alongside the ankle, heel, or arch of the foot that is impacted by foot positioning

☑️You feel increased fatigue with activity

☑️You experience knee or ankle collapse during single-leg movements

☑️You feel pain that gradually builds over time

The goal is to build stronger feet, better ankle control, and more resilient movement patterns.
