Slow down in construction zones.
The people behind the cones and barriers are not just workers — they are someone’s family, someone’s safe place, someone’s whole world.

Today was another toolbox talk on a construction site but today wasn’t focused on statistics, awareness numbers, or just another conversation about mental health.

Today, we focused on a skill.

We took time to teach and practice emotional body scanning — learning how to slow down long enough to recognize what stress, pressure, anxiety, anger, and overwhelm actually feel like in the body before they turn into shutdown, conflict, burnout, or crisis.

One of the biggest things we see in the trades is that many people have learned how to push through pain, ignore stress, and disconnect from themselves just to make it through the workday. But when we never learn how to check in with ourselves, eventually the body starts speaking louder through exhaustion, irritability, isolation, addiction, or mental health struggles.

At Healing with Katie, we are working to improve the culture of the trades by bringing real conversations, practical tools, emotional awareness, and human connection directly onto job sites.

Changing culture does not happen through posters alone.
It happens through conversations.
Through skills.
Through leadership.
Through showing workers they matter beyond their production.

We would love to see more companies in the trades industry begin making space for conversations like these within their workplaces. Creating a stronger culture starts with giving people the tools and support to better understand themselves and each other.

If your company is looking to bring practical mental health conversations, toolbox talks, leadership support, or culture-building training into your workplace, we would love to support your team.

Every toolbox talk is another step toward building safer, healthier, and more connected workplaces in the trades industry.

Today’s Toolbox Talk conversation was different. We talked about one simple but powerful question:

“Why is it so hard to ask for help?”

No matter if it’s the blue-collar industry or not, one thing I continue to hear from people especially those in crisis is:

“I’ve been wanting to ask for help… I just don’t know how.”

But a lot of times, it’s not truly about not knowing how.
It’s about the emotions behind asking.
The fear.
The shame.
The pressure.
The worry of being judged.
The feeling of not wanting to burden someone else.

Today I had the privilege of speaking again with Hoffman Brothers Construction Company, a company I’ve now been working with for the past 3 years. Every time I walk onto a job site, people know who I am. They know I’m there to talk about mental health, and they welcome the conversation.

What continues to impact me the most are the people who come up afterward to share a personal story or simply say, “Thank you.”

That alone reminds me that these conversations matter. The culture is changing. People are listening. People are opening up. And together, we are making a difference within the trades industry.

I’m truly honored to be part of this upcoming Behavior Health Panel at the Michigan Safety Conference.

This conversation is an important one—because mental health in the workplace is not just a personal issue, it’s a cultural one. The environments we build, the support we offer, and the conversations we’re willing to have all directly impact the well-being and effectiveness of our teams.

I’m grateful to stand alongside such a strong group of professionals who are all committed to making a difference in how we approach mental health—especially in industries where it’s often overlooked or misunderstood.

If you’re attending the conference, I would love for you to join us:

I had the opportunity to serve as the keynote speaker today for Iafrate Construction.

Today’s conversation was a little different than many of the talks I give. Instead of focusing solely on mental health, we spent time diving into leadership in the trades and how building a strong culture in this industry is very different from any other.

In the trades, leadership isn’t just about titles it’s about understanding the reality of the work. The long hours. The physical labor. The sweat, grit, and sacrifice that go into what our workforce does every single day.

Together, we explored what leadership really looks like in this environment and took time to break down different personality styles that show up on job sites and in organizations. When leaders understand these differences, it opens the door for stronger communication, deeper connection, and the kind of support our trades industry truly needs.

It was an honor to stand in a room full of leaders who care deeply about their teams and are willing to have meaningful conversations about how we can do better.

Real leadership in the trades means showing up, listening, and creating a culture where people know they matter.

Grateful for the opportunity to share the space and the conversation with the Iafrate Construction team today.
