Have you wondered whether cracking your toe knuckles is harmful?🤔

The good news is that current research suggests it’s generally not something to worry about.

When you crack a joint, the sound is usually caused by one of two things:
• A rapid release of gas bubbles within the joint’s synovial fluid.
• A tendon, ligament, or muscle snapping over a nearby structure. In the smaller joints of the toes, this explanation is often considered more likely.

So, does it damage your joints?

According to the research available, there is very little evidence that occasional toe or knuckle cracking leads to arthritis or significant joint damage. Some studies have found that people who crack their knuckles frequently may have more swelling around the joints or slightly reduced grip strength, but the evidence isn’t strong enough to draw definitive conclusions.

For the toes specifically, there is even less research. Since we don’t rely on our toes for gripping objects like we do our hands, any potential impact on day-to-day function is likely to be minimal.

🩺Dr. Lin’s Take:
“If cracking your toe joints feels good and isn’t causing pain, I don’t have a problem with my patients doing it.”

As always, if your toe joints are painful, swollen, locking, or difficult to move, it’s a good idea to have them evaluated by a podiatrist!🦶

🦶As odd as it may sound, the hair on your toes - or lack thereof - could be an indication of your overall foot health and circulation.

Hair on the toes means that blood is flowing all the way down to these areas and providing the hair follicles with a healthy amount of oxygen and nutrients to grow this hair. If toe hair starts to thin or disappear, this may be an indication of circulation issues. During a foot exam with your podiatrist, they will closely examine many aspects of your feet and toes including hair growth, temperature, coloration and texture of your skin. Podiatrists work closely with vascular specialists so if any concerns regarding circulation arise, a referral can be placed.

Everybody is different, of course, so some people simply don’t grow hair on their toes and feet - and that’s okay! However, if you notice any sudden and unusual changes with your feet or toes, it is likely worth discussing with a medical professional.
