On the fifth anniversary of life-saving care for Logan Bouvier, his mother arranged a reunion with the “absolutely amazing” doctor who saved his life: the legendary Stephen Guertin, M.D., the retired leader of what is now the C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital at University of Michigan Health-Sparrow.

The Holt family had their reunion with Guertin Wednesday, June 3, and there were smiles and hugs all around. Mom Jessica Bouvier wanted the reunion so the family could meet and hug Guertin and “just to say thank you for saving his life.” Guertin was clearly honored that the family sought him out.

Logan, now 16, was admitted to UM Health-Sparrow Lansing in September 2021, according to his mom, with various ailments, including heart failure, sepsis and pneumonia. Guertin helped him recover from all of that, but Logan’s life had to be saved again when he was found to have a large pulmonary embolism after being discharged from the hospital.

Logan is among the many, many children who benefited from Dr. Guertin and UM Health-Sparrow care.

This week, leaders from across our health system spent the day visiting our community hospitals, including UM Health-Sparrow Carson, Clinton, Eaton and Ionia to see care close to home in action.

These visits offered a chance to connect directly with team members, hear about successes and the needs of each community and see firsthand the outstanding care being delivered every day.

At Michigan Medicine, we believe we are better together and days like this reinforce that core value. We will continue building on what makes each hospital special while expanding access to exceptional care across our state's network of care.

Thank you to all of the team members who welcomed us and shared their insights. Your dedication is what makes our mission possible.

UM Health-Sparrow Clinton is pleased to honor Phlebotomist Kayla Gallardo as its recent BEE Award recipient for her skillful technique and exceptional patient care.

The patient nomination stated they are often poked multiple times during blood draws, which can be very unpleasant. When they went into the UM Health-Sparrow Clinton lab, “it was the first time in my life that I didn’t even feel a pinch or sting. Erica drew my blood with such skill and ease that it seemed like second nature to her. It is so rare to see someone who is naturally talented and skilled in their profession!”

The BEE Award recognizes excellence among the clinical support team members who work alongside nursing teams to deliver quality, compassionate care. BEE is an acronym for Be Exceptional Every day.

💐Most team members bring a lunch or a laptop to work. Rachel Tibbe brings dahlias. 💐

Tibbe, a utilization review RN at University of Michigan Health-West, has spent the last six years growing flowers in her home gardens and passing out bouquets to colleagues across the hospital. In 2025 alone, she shared more than 120 arrangements filled with dahlias, hydrangeas, gladioli and snapdragons.

“I don’t do it for recognition,” Tibbe said. “I do it because flowers make people smile.”

Tibbe traces her love of gardening to her grandmother, who also grew flowers. She said those childhood memories stayed with her long into adulthood.

When the flowers are ready to be picked, Tibbe arrives at UM Health-West with buckets of fresh-cut blooms. She does not limit her gifts to her own department. Team members in the cafeteria, environmental services and patient floors have all received bouquets.

“Everyone deserves a little beauty in their day,” Tibbe said. “You never know what someone is going through.”

We were honored to host community volunteers participating in the Amaia Edmond Day of Service on Sunday, May 31, to benefit Gift of Life Michigan.

The Lansing girl was just 7 when she was killed during a home invasion in 2010, and her organ donations saved five lives. Volunteers came to UM Health-Sparrow Lansing to create some 75 comfort blankets placed over organ donors during Gift of Life Honor Walks and then presented to families as a keepsake. Amaia’s father, John, even made an appearance to thank and encourage the volunteers.

UM Health-Sparrow Lansing Emergency Department team members had a great time helping kids better understand health care and getting more comfortable with medical staff at MSU’s annual Teddy Bear Picnic. Children were encouraged to bring their favorite stuffed animal for a “wellness check-up” so they could see first-hand they had nothing to fear. Amidst the education, there was also face painting, games and more. UM Health-Sparrow has been part of the event for years and it’s a great introduction to summer.

🎨 WHAT A STORY!🎨

Chris Triola came to the UM Health-Sparrow Herbert-Herman Cancer Center for 20 days after being diagnosed with stage 1 breast cancer.

Now, she has returned the only way she knows how: with art.

Triola unveiled a new textile piece in the radiology oncology waiting room, a gift of deep gratitude for the Herbert-Herman Cancer Center staff and the place where "nature and art heal."

"I have to give something back. This is my way of saying thank you," Triola said. "You will be brought into a world that's very caring, very nurturing. Your whole being, your mind, is put at ease. Your anxieties, you're told exactly what to expect, where to go, how to approach this mentally and emotionally."

Luckily Triola’s cancer was caught early and radiation treatments went well. For Triola, the artwork represents the fragments of a difficult journey reassembled into something whole and beautiful. Each small triangle she cut and placed by hand mirrors the radiation treatments she endured. When joined together, the isolated pieces create a unified work of healing and hope.

As patients and families wait in the oncology radiology waiting room facing their own uncertain paths, Triola hopes the piece whispers what she learned: You are not alone, and beauty can grow from the hardest places.

"It's a long process, getting it just right," she said. Triola credits her care team, saying every staff member at the Herbert-Herman Cancer Center plays a role in healing.

"The staff is always upbeat," Triola said. "They embrace patients. I looked forward to coming here every day."

She also points to the Cancer Center's design, artwork, light, and connection to nature as essential to her recovery.

"To live in beauty, or be in beauty, in a moment of great stress and anxiety is a wonderful place to be," Triola said. "And the care and technology they used to capture this invasive thing was just spectacular. They know that nature and art heal."
