After I called the police and my dad went to jail for sexually abusing me, he was eventually released and petitioned for supervised visits with my brother and me.
My brother said no. His no was respected.
I said no. Mine wasn’t.
My Aunt Diane told me, “You don’t have to like it. You just have to do it.” She didn’t want anyone thinking she was trying to keep me from my dad.
Without realizing it, she reinforced what my parents had already taught me:
What happens to you doesn’t matter. How you feel about it doesn’t matter. Keep your mouth shut, endure it and move on.
So I did.
I carried that belief into adulthood. Into relationships, workplaces and situations where my body screamed no, but I had been conditioned not to listen.
I was physically and sexually abused by every partner I had. I was propositioned by employers and put into deeply uncomfortable situations. Again and again, I abandoned myself because self-abandonment was what I knew.
Healing changed that.
I built trust with myself. I forgave myself. I stopped hating myself. I learned that my no belongs to me. My body belongs to me. My preferences matter. I have autonomy. I have choice.
And my life began reflecting that back to me.
Today I live in peace, connected to my body and my emotions. I am surrounded by people who treat me with kindness, tenderness, love and respect because those are the things I finally learned to give myself.
You can call yourself a queen all day long, but saying it isn’t the same as believing it. Your life changes when you believe it enough to live it.
Energy doesn’t lie. Frequency doesn’t lie. But people do.
Get in touch with yourself so deeply that you can feel when something isn’t true. Use your discernment. Trust your instincts. Listen to your body when it says no.
I spent most of my life abandoning myself.
I don’t anymore.
