A little house update! 🏡

We’ve landed on “Nightfall” charcoal for the exterior of the house!

We think it’ll pair beautifully with our orange-red roof and dark wood vintage windows. It leans a little masculine, but we think we can soften it with decor and accents. Overall, it has that grounded feel we’re after, and justin thinks it’ll look just as good surrounded by summer greens as it will against the colors of fall and winter.

What do you think? Would you go with charcoal? 🌿 (note these are just scrap test pieces for envisioning not the actual siding)

While we’re talking about the roof, here’s a little building tip we learned along the way!

Did you know you can ask roofing companies if they have any dented or imperfect panels available at a discount? Many have sections that can’t be sold at full price because of minor cosmetic imperfections.

We lucked out and found just enough panels in a single color to cover our roof. We got them for a steal, plus an extra discount for paying cash!

And the wild part? You can barely tell. There are some slight bends along the edges that only a roofing professional would likely notice, and the finish itself wasn’t damaged.

Building on a budget takes a willingness to explore your resources and think outside the box. We’ve been working on paying off debt, saving where we can, and finding a pace that doesn’t leave us burned out. Making our money and our energy go further is a must.

Sometimes it pays to ask what’s available before assuming you have to buy everything brand new at full price.

A little reminder to put the screen down and get some fresh air today 💚

It’s that time of the year again. It sure would be easier to flip a switch but it would be a lot less cozy. 🥰

We spent Sunday sowing seeds for the next growing season. 🌱

This is our second year planting ginseng, and we’re giving garlic a try for the first time!

Garlic and potatoes are probably two of our most-used staples in the kitchen, so as we start planning out the garden, it made sense to start with things we know we’ll use. 😂

The ginseng, though, has a little more of a story behind it.

Justin’s dad remembers ginseng growing all over these mountains when he was growing up. In the five years we’ve been here, we haven’t come across any growing wild on our property.

We’ve also had a few signs over the years, along with our neighbors, that people have been coming into the area to poach it.

One of our hopes is to help bring an Appalachian staple back to our little piece of the woods. It’s a slow process, but we’re happy to be planting another year’s worth and giving it a place to grow.

There’s something special about planting things now that we might not see the results of for years.

Have you ever “planted” something knowing it would be years before you’d see the results? I’d love to hear what you’ve been gr”growing”. 🌿

A little piece of our story. 🌿

We’ve gained more than we’ve sacrificed through this way of living — and I’m still discovering what that really means.

I share the little pieces here, in the middle of everyday life. And over on YouTube, there’s a little more room to tell some of the longer stories behind them.

Not because we have it all figured out.

Just because this is what we’re living, noticing, and learning.

A slower life. A more intentional home. And all the ordinary ways everyday life becomes medicine.

The window walls are framed! 💚

It feels so good to have some movement on the main house again after a few years of pause. Slowly but surely, we’re getting there!

Next up is siding and paint. We’re thinking a deep charcoal to complement the orange roof and walnut windows. Sage green was on the list, too, but since the tiny barn is already sage, we thought we’d do something different for the house.

It’s funny how some things take so much longer than we ever imagined, but it feels good to see this one moving forward again.

I’m curious…Is there something you’ve been working toward for a long time that you’re finally starting to see come together?

Sometimes you don’t know what the next chapter is going to look like.

You just keep showing up for the life that’s in front of you.

A little work.
A little uncertainty.
A little faith.
A little ginseng. 😂🌿

Looking back, some of the things that felt uncertain at the time were simply pieces of a life that was still unfolding.

Funny how some uncertain seasons look different once you’re on the other side.

Maybe we don’t always need to know where it’s going.

Maybe we just need to keep living it.
