A hysterectomy is a major abdominal and pelvic surgery. Just as physical therapy is often recommended after knee or shoulder surgery, pelvic floor physical therapy can help support recovery after a hysterectomy.

Pelvic floor therapy may help improve mobility, address scar tissue restrictions, reduce pain, restore core and pelvic floor function, and improve bladder and bowel symptoms.

Once you have been cleared by your surgeon to begin pelvic floor physical therapy, consider scheduling an evaluation to support your recovery.

Many people think leaks are only about “weak muscles,” but often it’s about how your pelvic floor and diaphragm work together to manage pressure. Even strong muscles can leak if the timing is off!

Here’s the quick breakdown:

Breathing matters: Your diaphragm and pelvic floor should move together.

Timing is key: Leaks often happen when these muscles don’t respond during coughs, sneezes, or lifting.

It’s more than Kegels: Strength helps, but coordination and pressure control make the biggest difference.

You don’t have to just live with leaks — small adjustments can make a big difference!

Hypermobility: It’s Not Just About Joints!

Some people naturally have more flexible joints than others—this is called hypermobility. While it can be a gift for activities like gymnastics or dance, it can also make joints more prone to aches, sprains, or instability.

Here’s the thing: your muscles are key players too. When joints move beyond their normal range, muscles have to work harder to keep them stable.

This can lead to:

Muscle fatigue or soreness

Weak stabilizing muscles around knees, hips, shoulders, and core

Increased risk of joint injuries

Good news: With the right exercises and guidance, you can strengthen the muscles around your joints, improve control and stability, and reduce pain.

💡 Tip: Controlled strength training, balance exercises, and low-impact workouts like swimming or cycling are great ways to support hypermobile joints.

If your joints feel loose, ache, or get injured easily, a physical therapy assessment can help you find the best plan for stability and long-term joint health.
