Food is medicine, and at UM Capital, we mean it.

Our recent Food Is Medicine Open House celebrated a partnership that's flourishing and feeding our community. Together with the Capital Area Food Bank, we're getting nutritious food into the hands of the families who need it most.

"At UM Capital, our mission extends beyond providing medical care. We are committed to expanding access to the resources that help our community thrive," said Nathaniel Richardson, Jr., president of UM Capital Region Health. "Through this partnership with the Capital Area Food Bank, we are helping patients access nutritious food that supports healthier lifestyles, helps them better manage chronic conditions, and improves overall health. Serving more than 200 families is an important milestone in our shared commitment to advancing health and well-being in Prince George's County."

To every family we've served and every partner walking this with us: thank you.

Pride Month is here.

To our LGBTQ+ team members, patients, and community: you belong here. As the people who shape who we are and the care we deliver every day.

Our commitment is simple. Every patient deserves healthcare that sees them fully. Every team member deserves a workplace where they can show up as themselves.

Happy Pride. 🏳️‍🌈

Protecting your skin can go a long way in lowering your risk of skin cancer. Wear sunscreen daily, cover up with long sleeves and a wide-brimmed hat, and seek shade during peak sun hours (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.).

No prevention method is perfect, so staying aware of changes in your skin is important. If skin cancer develops—especially on the face—early detection leads to the best treatment outcomes.

When Dennis Erah’s father became sick, healthcare became personal.

What began as a career in accounting turned into a calling to care for others. Dennis joined the University of Maryland Medical System as a Patient Care Technician and continued to grow through every chapter of his journey, earning his bachelor’s in nursing, completing his master’s degree, and now pursuing his Doctor of Nursing Practice degree.

Stories like Dennis’s are a reminder that growth happens when purpose meets opportunity. Explore nursing careers with the University of Maryland Capital Region Health:

This Memorial Day, we pause to honor the brave service members who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. We also recognize the families, loved ones and communities who carry their legacy forward every day.

In moments when the world can feel uncertain, we’re reminded of the importance of compassion, unity and caring for one another. Those values continue to guide us — not only in healthcare, but in how we show up for our communities each day.

To all who have served, sacrificed and continue to carry the weight of that service: we thank you.

Wishing everyone a safe and meaningful Memorial Day.

Anyone can have a stroke, but some people are at higher risk.

Some risk factors can’t be changed, such as age and family history. Risk also increases if you’ve had a stroke before. Men are more likely to have a stroke, but more women die from strokes. African Americans also face a higher risk, often linked to higher rates of high blood pressure, obesity, and diabetes.

Knowing your risk is an important first step in prevention—talk with your provider about ways to stay healthy.

Hospital Week officially wrapped last week. The work behind it didn't.

To every nurse, physician, tech, therapist, transporter, environmental services pro, food services team member, and behind-the-scenes hero at UM Capital Region Health: thank you. You showed up last week. You showed up this morning. You'll be here tomorrow. And the patients and families who walk through our doors are better for it.

We celebrated you with treats, gifts, and a few well-earned laughs. But the real celebration is the care you deliver shift after shift, season after season, year after year.

Here's to the people who make this hospital what it is.
