Congratulations to our middle school and high school winners of Larned State Hospital’s 11th Annual Mental Illness Awareness Art Competition!

LSH wrapped up Day 2 of Mental Illness Awareness Week with our National Day of Prayer for Mental Illness Recovery and Understanding, a presentation for LSH employees on Staff Wellness as it relates to Burnout and Self-Care, and some of our clinical staff teamed up to engage our patients/residents in a MIAW Trivia Challenge to see how much they really know about mental illness!

A special thank you to Pastor Jerry Hickey and Pastor Stan Milliken from Valley Community Church and Pastor Angela DeFisher from Larned United Methodist Church for assisting LSH with the Day of Prayer events.

Another shout out to Avenues for Change and Art Therapist Heather Befort who provided the employee presentation and gave us an opportunity to spend some time coloring and decompressing over our lunch hour!

Our Clinical Information Management Department was also hard at work Tuesday hanging up our Stories of Hope flyers for Wednesday's events. Check out a few examples below!

We also have some BBQ lunch events going on Wednesday for patients/residents provided by our Food Service contractor, Sodexo, and a Community Cookout Fundraiser going on for our employees and others to enjoy!

Finally....Don't forget that Wednesday is our Community Movie night with The Wild Robot showing at the Larned State Theater at 6:30pm! Admission is free! See you then!

💚 Mental Illness Awareness Week 2026: It Starts With Us! 💚

Today kicks off Mental Illness Awareness Week (MIAW), October 4–10, and we’re excited to celebrate the week together at Larned State Hospital!

This year’s theme is “It Starts With Us,” reminding us that mental health affects all of us and creating a culture of understanding, compassion, connection, and hope starts with each of us.

☕ We started the morning with our MIAW Proclamation & Coffee Hour at the Sunflower Grill, joined by the Larned Mayor as we officially recognized Mental Illness Awareness Week in our community. Thank you to everyone who joined us!

Our MIAW activities include wellness presentations, the MIAW Trivia Challenge, Stories of Hope, a patient and resident BBQ, community movie night, the MIAW Walk for All, recovery presentations, art activities, and more!

Let’s use this week to learn, connect, support one another, reduce stigma, and celebrate mental health and recovery.

LSH is pleased to introduce two new medical professionals joining Larned State Hospital. Please help us welcome Dr. Royce Gray and Vanessa Doan, FNP-BC, PMHNP-BC, who bring extensive experience in psychiatric care, high-acuity clinical environments, and interdisciplinary treatment.

Dr. Royce Gray joins LSH as a board-certified psychiatrist with significant experience caring for individuals with serious and complex mental illness. Most recently, Dr. Gray has provided psychiatric care at the El Dorado Correctional Facility, where he has worked with some of the most severely mentally ill individuals in KDOC custody, including patients receiving specialized intensive and transitional psychiatric services.

Vanessa Doan joins LSH as a dual board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner and Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. Vanessa brings a diverse clinical background spanning psychiatric care, emergency medicine, urgent care, primary care, and correctional mental health. Prior to joining LSH, Vanessa provided psychiatric care at Hutchinson Correctional Facility and previously practiced as a nurse practitioner in urgent care and hospital settings.

We are excited to have Dr. Gray and Vanessa join the LSH team and bring their knowledge, experience, and commitment to patient care to our hospital. Their combined backgrounds in serious mental illness, interdisciplinary care, high-acuity settings, and correctional behavioral health align well with the unique needs of the individuals we serve.

Larned State Hospital Campus Improvement Update

There is a lot happening across the Larned State Hospital campus! From infrastructure and safety upgrades to improvements that enhance the environment for patients, residents, staff, and families, several projects are continuing to move forward.

Here’s a look at some of the current projects:

🔧 HVAC Improvements
Work continues on several campus HVAC projects including the Auditorium, the Volunteer Building, and the Activity Therapy Building.

🛡️ Safety & Security Upgrades
The Isaac Ray duress system replacement remains in progress, while installation of the new Dillon Building duress system is anticipated to begin this fall. The Meyer Building fire alarm replacement is also nearing completion.

⚡ Power Plant Improvements
Work on Boiler Burner #2 at the Power Plant is nearing completion, supporting reliable infrastructure and continued campus operations.

🌳 Caring Hands Daycare Improvements — COMPLETE!
Several improvements at Caring Hands Daycare Center are now complete, including new flooring, an expanded playground and outdoor learning space, cameras and access controls, and concrete and parking improvements. These updates provide an enhanced environment for the children and families who use the center while improving safety, functionality, and appearance.

🏢 ATC Flooring Replacement
The ATC flooring replacement project is approximately 85% complete and is moving into its final phase.

🔌 Upcoming Electrical Improvements
Planned replacement of electrical panels at the Activity Therapy Building and houses located on campus are also underway. This project will support continued improvements to the campus electrical infrastructure.

📍 Progress Across Campus

From major infrastructure projects to safety upgrades and improvements to shared spaces, work continues throughout the LSH campus. Projects don't always move as quickly as we'd like, and timelines can change when additional issues are identified or materials are delayed, but we are continuing to move important projects forward.

We’re proud to see these investments taking shape across campus and appreciate the staff, contractors, and partners who continue to help improve Larned State Hospital.

Larned State Hospital was proud to participate in Hi5 Friday at LES today! Our team had a great time welcoming students, spreading positivity, and showing our support for the amazing kids in our community.

We are excited to share the schedule for this year’s Mental Illness Awareness Week at Larned State Hospital!

Our 2026 theme, “It Starts With Us,” reminds us that creating a culture of mental wellness begins with each of us. Through compassion, understanding, empowerment, and connection, we can reduce stigma, strengthen relationships, and build a more supportive community.
