Mother’s Day makes me think beyond flowers, brunches, and social posts. It makes me think about what it truly means to hold mothers up.
Not just celebrate them when the baby arrives.
Not just praise them for being “strong.”
But genuinely support them …emotionally, physically, spiritually, and communally.
I think we also have to honor the people who help hold mothers together. The grandmothers. The aunties. The sisters. The friends. The partners. The doulas. The village. The people checking in, showing up, bringing meals, watching the baby, listening without judgment, and reminding mothers that they do not have to carry everything alone.
Somewhere along the way, we drifted away from real village culture. We normalized isolation in motherhood. We praised exhaustion instead of support. We told mothers to “figure it out” instead of surrounding them with care.
That’s part of why I’m honored to be a doula.
For me, this work is bigger than birth. It’s about helping us get back to one another. Back to protecting mothers. Back to honoring their choices. Back to reminding women that they deserve to own their motherhood journey, fully, safely, confidently, and with support.
So today, I honor the mothers.
💛 I honor those grieving mothers.
💛 I honor the women longing to become mothers.
💛 And I honor every person helping hold a mother up while she pours into everyone else.
May we continue rebuilding the village our mothers always deserved. 💛
