What is a cervical cerclage?
It’s a procedure where your doctor places a stitch (or stitches) around the cervix to help keep it closed during pregnancy.
It’s usually done for women with cervical insufficiency — when the cervix is weaker than usual and may open too early, raising the risk of preterm birth or pregnancy loss.
Most of the time it’s done through the va**na (transva**nal) between 12–14 weeks, or a bit later if needed.
You’ll get anesthesia (spinal, epidural, or general), a speculum is placed, and the doctor places a strong suture around the cervix and ties it closed like a purse-string. The whole thing usually takes less than an hour.
Afterwards you might have some spotting, light cramping, or discharge for a few days. Most people go home the same day.
The stitch is typically removed around 36–37 weeks so you can go into labor naturally.

✨ Pros

* ✅ A nuchal cord (umbilical cord around the baby’s neck) is very common, occurring in about 20–30% of pregnancies.
* ✅ In most cases, it does not harm the baby during pregnancy.
* ✅ The umbilical cord is protected by a cushioning substance called Wharton’s jelly, which helps keep blood flowing.
* ✅ Many babies with a nuchal cord are born healthy without any complications.

⚠️ Cons

* ⚠️ In a small number of cases, the cord may become tight during labor, which can temporarily affect the baby’s heart rate.
* ⚠️ Rarely, additional monitoring during labor or delivery may be needed.
* ⚠️ A 3D/4D ultrasound can sometimes suggest a nuchal cord, but it cannot always confirm it with certainty.

💗 Remember: If your provider suspects your baby has the cord around their neck, they will monitor you closely and recommend the safest plan for you and your baby. Most nuchal cords do not lead to serious problems.
