As a kid, whenever someone asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, I’d light up and confidently say, “A teacher.” Looking back, it made perfect sense—I was always “teaching” my little audience of flower pots lined up in front of our house. I’d talk to them for hours, pouring my heart out to those silent, beautiful blooms.

When I decided to become a physician, I never imagined I’d end up living out those early childhood dreams in such unexpected ways.
My love for teaching found its way into my life again and again. It started when I became an assistant professor at a medical school, where I had the privilege of guiding eager medical students and residents. Later, as a physician advisor, I stepped into a new role, teaching my peers about the intricate business side of medicine. It was fulfilling in ways I hadn’t anticipated.

But the universe wasn’t finished with me yet.
I found myself on stages, speaking to women just like me—women hungry for growth and determined to live with intention. It’s funny how life comes full circle. That little girl, who once “taught” flower pots, is now living her dream, helping others bloom.

“ I am sorry, Ma, but we can’t find your reservation,” I heard the customer service rep say to me. I watched the clock tick away slowly. It was almost time to board our flight, still we were yet to check in despite getting to Lisbon airport a solid 2 hours before our scheduled flight out to Casablanca.
We were shuttled from one check-in representative to another. They all agreed we had a flight reservation, as shown on my confirmation email, but we were all puzzled that it was not showing up on their system to allow us to check in.
I could feel the frustration build up slowly in my stomach; at some point, I realized that getting frustrated and upset wouldn’t get me the result I wanted. My goal was to get us all to Morocco on that day.
We had already checked out of the Lisbon hotel and I had a friend on the other side of immigration waiting for us plus all arrangements concluded for Morocco.
However more importantly was the fact that I had three kids looking up to me on how I handled this situation.
I observed that they were quickly catching up on my mood. Every time I let out a hiss, they seemed to do the same in unison. Like it was an agreement we all made.
Previously I would have lost it before I even had a chance to realize what I had done, but on this particular day and time, I realized this was my chance to teach them one of the
soft skills I have learned with all my years of traveling ADAPTABILITY now further heightened by a skill I picked from coaching MINDFULNESS.
I quickly went online and found tickets for the next flight, which was only 4 hours out. I knew I had to secure those tickets. At the same time, I continued discussing with the agents, so while in line to speak with another agent, I bought the tickets.
Eventually, it all worked out. We ended up grateful for the extra hours we got before our new flight, as it allowed the kids to grab some food and gave us enough time to go through the very long immigration line without any panic.
In all, I was grateful I was able to handle the situation without losing my cool while teaching my kids a new lesson.

The fact that I love music and love to dance am sure, is no secret to anyone close to me. I mean, I torment them frequently with videos of me dancing at any given opportunity.

I dance when I am happy.
I dance when I am sad.
I dance when I am bored.
I dance when I am doing chores around the house
I even dance while driving… almost every single time.

My poor husband says I start dancing from the house even before we make it to a party venue, and if I am honest, he is not too far from the truth.

On this particular day, while taking my kids to school, I got engrossed in my usual singing and dancing while driving. In a quick second, I glanced in the direction of my oldest, who was seated next to me on the passenger seat; my goal was to nudge her to move along with me. Still, I noticed she looked away in the other direction, intentionally trying to avoid looking in my direction. I recognized the look on my shy daughter's teenage face. I turned to my side of the road and noticed the pair in the car next to mine beaming with smiles. I acknowledged them with a nod which moved in synchrony with the rhythm of the beat to the song I was listening to, and continued dancing.

I turned to my daughter and asked her what she was thinking when she saw them looking at me. She told me she thought they were laughing at me, which made her feel embarrassed.
I went on to ask my younger kids what they thought. My middle one told me her thoughts were that she believed they enjoyed watching me dance and admired my dancing, which made her feel proud. My youngest also had a different opinion. He thought they must have thought I was being silly and funny, so they laughed along with me.

Each of my three kids had a different thought and a different reality of the situation.
Trust me to use it as a coaching moment( I know, I know, sometimes it’s hard to take off the coaching hat when dealing with your kids).

This is what I told my kids.” Where we start to create our reality is in how we think and interpret the events in our life. Our thoughts become our reality”.

Think about that while I go off to dance as always.

One of the many stories I told myself as an attending earlier on in my career was that "doctors are not good with money and that includes me".

This was a thought that caused me so much pain as I proved that thought right repeatedly over the years, In an effort to secure my financial independence I hired multiple people to help manage my money, believing that just about anyone who spoke the money language was better than me, I did little or no research on my part, and went more off blind trust. Each time I realized I had made another wrong move financially, made me even more convinced I was not good with money. I believed that for several years.

It wasn't until I started changing that story, by accepting that what I did was fail at managing my money as against "calling myself a failure when it comes to money".
Knowing that what I went through was only an experience and did not define me made me eager to change that.Once I realized this I decided I wanted to have a different experience with my next investment, so I set out to prepare myself.I did that by increasing my financial knowledge not just by hiring advisors but also going through a lot of financial self education. That has proved to be one of my best investments in myself.

This happened only after I accepted that my failure at something is only an experience and does not define who I am.
