This Saturday. Oct. 24, Southern Hills Hospital, in partnership with the Sunrise Health System, is hosting our “Crush the Crisis” prescription drug take back day.

Together with LVMPD, MountainView Hospital and Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center, we’re making it easier for community members to safely and anonymously dispose of medications they no longer need.

From injury to Ironman. 🏅

After suffering a herniated disc during a race, Las Vegas athlete Nicholas Dizon struggled with even the simplest daily activities. But with the help of Dr. Chinedu Nwasike and the spine care team at Southern Hills Hospital, Nick was able to return to the activities he loves. Within two weeks of surgery, he was ready to reintegrate light movement back into his daily routine and within three months, he was back on his bike training.

Just one year after spine surgery, Nick competed in an Ironman triathlon, finishing in second place— an accomplishment that once felt uncertain.

🎉10 years of freestanding ERs 🎉

This week, we celebrate 10 years since the opening of ER at The Lakes, the first freestanding emergency room in Nevada. Since then, Southern Hills has opened two additional freestanding ERs, with another coming to Inspirada in November. This will bring the Sunrise Health System a total of eight freestanding emergency rooms across the valley.

What this means for our community is more accessibility, more options and more convenience. When minutes matter, getting to the closest ER is the priority and these freestanding ERs help patients get care quicker, without traveling to a hospital campus.

Nine years later, we remain .

Today, we honor the 58 lives lost by the tragedy of Oct. 1, 2017, and we hold close to our hearts those who survived, along with the families and loved ones who carry the impact of that night with them.

In the face of unimaginable tragedy, Las Vegas came together. First responders, healthcare professionals, neighbors and strangers answered with compassion, courage and an unwavering commitment to one another.

At Southern Hills Hospital, our colleagues mobilized people, supplies and support as hospitals across the Las Vegas Valley worked together to care for the injured. Their compassion, dedication and commitment reflected the very best of our healthcare community.

We will never forget the strength our community showed that night and in the days and weeks that followed.

As part of HCA Healthcare, we're proud to announce a $4.8 million gift to Pepperdine University to help launch the School of Nursing with the Pepperdine University College of Health Science. This is part of HCA Healthcare's greater commitment to helping address the national nursing shortage.

“We believe that investing in nursing education is vital to the future of healthcare,” said Sammie Mosier, DHA, MA, BSN, NE-BC, senior vice president and chief nurse executive for HCA Healthcare. “It is a privilege to support Pepperdine University’s new School of Nursing as they prepare the next generation of caregivers with the tools, confidence and compassion to care for patients and communities.”

Pepperdine’s School of Nursing opened this fall and currently enrolls 68 students. The school provides undergraduate and graduate nursing degree programs, including a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and an Entry Level Master of Science, Clinical Nurse Leader (ELM-CNL). As part of their curriculum, nursing students will have the opportunity to complete clinical rotations at our hospital, Los Robles Regional Medical Center, in Thousand Oaks, California.

Alexis Mussi has always been a champion for culture, teamwork and operational excellence. We're proud to welcome her back to MountainView Hospital as CEO and look forward to the impact she'll continue to make across the HCA Healthcare Far West Division.

Welcome Alexis Mussi, new chief executive officer at MountainView Hospital!

This new position is a homecoming of sorts for Alexis, who led Surgical Services at MountainView Hospital before joining Southern Hills in 2016 as Chief Operating Officer, ultimately becoming CEO in 2019. Alexis began her healthcare career at Sunrise Children’s Hospital in 2008 as Director of Physician and Provider Relations, later advancing through leadership roles that fueled her passion for operations and strategy.

Alexis transformed Southern Hills during her tenure, growing the hospital from 134 to 331 beds and leading milestone projects such as the state’s first freestanding emergency room, ER at the Lakes, and the Division’s first psychiatric facility, the Pavilion.

Beyond these achievements, Alexis is known as a culture champion, bringing teams together to advance our mission -- the care and improvement of human life.
